Ralph becomes tired of being the bad guy and dreams of being a hero like Felix. He leaves ‘Fix-it Felix Jr’ to game-hop around the arcade in search of acceptance and a medal of his own.
Arcade game ‘Fix-it Felix Jr’ is celebrating its 30th anniversary, lasting decades after other arcade games have come and gone.
Felix, the hero of the game fixes the building, after Ralph has destroyed it, and is given a medal and the adulation of the citzens at the end of each game while Ralph ends up thrown off the roof into the mud. But when the arcade is closed for the night, the characters of the games ditch their game roles and become 3-dimensional, and we see more of their real personalities.
In Wreck-it Ralph, Disney’s latest 3D movie released Boxing Day 2012 for the holidays, Ralph – voiced by John C Reilly – becomes tired of being the bad guy and dreams of being a hero. He leaves ‘Fix-it Felix Jr’ to game-hop around the arcade in search of acceptance – and a medal – of his own.
When he crash lands into ‘Sugar Rush’, Ralph finally gets a chance to become a real hero, if he can make it in time.
I loved the way Disney and Pixar contrasted the pixelated characters with the HD graphics we are so used to playing now. In fact, even the characters comment on it. The believeable back story to the ‘Fix-it Felix Jr’ game makes you swear you’d played it in a real arcade, and even though you didn’t, you can dive back into 8-bit and play both Fix-it Felix Jr and Wreck-it Ralph on the iPad or iPhone.
It’s a really entertaining movie that we probably enjoyed us much as – if not more than – the kids.
