The Caker is a fun and stylish new book containing 50 new and unusual cake recipes from Jordan Rondel. Jordan, a twenty-four-year-old Aucklander who has been baking since she was only 10, says she was largely influenced by her foodie grandparents in France.

In January 2010 Jordan launched her own business, baking and delivering cakes to her cake-fans. As we see throughout her beautiful look, she has been involved in the NZ fashion industry, which brings a stylish fashion element to her baking and to the presentation of the book. The design of this recipe book is reminiscent of a fashion magazine, with its polaroid-type snapshots of cakes and her friends.

The Caker is very pretty book, all of the cakes look so pretty, a little rustic and dainty with pastel colour icing and flowers but homely and most importantly taste wholesome, as she intended. It has unique and unusual recipes, including some of her baking tips which contain some very useful information. Many organic ingredients, spelt four, almond flour, coconut oil or honey are used in her recipes. For those who are vegan, gluten-free, or enjoy more nutritious ingredients than white sugar or white flour, these recipes are excellent.

As a serious home baker myself, I’ve baked two cakes from the book already.

Below: The Double-layer lemon and blueberry cake with lemon cake. I love Jordan’s decoration using fresh flowers, very stylish. Yes, everyone loves lemon cake.

Below: Dark chocolate, pear and pistachio cake with ganache. It has a simple but attractive decoration using a sprinkle of chopped roasted pistachios. The contrast of black chocolate with green pistachios looks gorgeous. Love the pear and dark chocolate combination!

I really would like to bake everything in this book. Next, I’m keen to bake the multi-layer vanilla sponge cake with cream and jam – a simple recipe, yet very impressive looking. It looks like a great occasional
cake.

The Caker is a fun and gorgeous read; it will show you how to create delicious, yet simple cakes in your home kitchen.
