Kai to Pie

We visited Auckland Museum by torchlight for its new Food Glorious Food event at the excellent Kai to Pie which showcases the wealth of people and cultures through the lens of Fashion, Feast, Fuel and Future…

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD
Auckland Museum

I have always been keen to participate in a Night at Auckland Museum event; exploring the museum by torchlight has a certain childhood appeal. Food Glorious Food was a great excuse to do this and combine my love of food.

Food Glorious Food gives children (and their parents) the chance to explore the news Kai to Pie Auckland on Your Plate exhibition after hours and encounter a host of colourful food characters while they participate in fun activities.

Armed with my husband and two sons (aged 4 and 2 yrs), we were given a special map to wander the darkened exhibition halls trying to find each character or clue. Each activity earned a letter.

After unscrambling all our letters to make a word were rewarded with a special treat from Polly the Trolley Dolly. My wide eyed boys were wowed by the marshmallow kebabs and even more gobsmacked by the huge chocolate fountain to dip them in.

I was surprised at quite how dark the museum actually was – torches are a must. It definitely added to the sense of adventure and even I was a little spooked exploring the dark alcoves.

This was a great family event, though my eldest son (who is quite timid) was a little afraid at times. But generally the kids seemed to have a blast with their torches racing around trying to find clues, and engaging with the characters.

Food Glorious Food ties in with the Kai to Pie exhibition – which deserves a visit on its own merits. It showcases the extraordinary wealth of people and cultures through the lens of food, based around four elements – Fashion, Feast, Fuel and Future.
