Karen Walker and Mikhail Gherman kicked off the first of ten weeks of conversation and food themed evenings at 1885 bar in Britomart with last night’s ‘Food and People’ event.
The evening saw 150 people come to try small plates of food – priced at $5 with the fish at $10, and cocktails for $10 – in the fabulous heritage space with its exposed beams and old brickwork walls and the best behind-bar bookcase in Auckland.
Thread spoke with co-organiser Connor Nestor who said they have tried to gather a collection of interesting personalities to speak briefly around the topic of food. The faces hark from the worlds of fashion, music and local Auckland life including Steve Dunstan, Jay Reeve, Nick D, Charotte Ryan, and many more. There’s free entry to the public with doors open from 7pm and speakers on at 8.15pm every Thursday until Christmas 2012.
The first night was a great crowd and a cool vibe with a slideshow of famous chefs and celebrities such as Martha Stewart and Seinfeld projected on the bricks. The actual interview conversation was incredibly brief at about six minutes – we’d love to see an open forum of questions from the floor perhaps – and some of Mikhail’s funny anecdotes would not have gone astray.
