Sometimes, you don’t want to cook a compilcated meal. You just a nice, easy – and not too expensive – dinner.
New cooking titles ‘Help! There’s a Stove in My Kitchen’, ‘Family Food for a Steal’, and ‘Slow Cooker Simple’ give you just the ideas you need for this very thing.
Now that it’s turning to winter my thoughts are turning to comfort food. Which is why the slow cooker is looking suddenly very attractive.
‘Slow Cooker Simple: 50 Inspiration and affordable recipes’ by Sue Ashworth and published by Kyle Books ($19.99 from New Holland), is a jam-packed soft-cover book of ideas.
From Light Bites (the smoked salon and cream cheese pots look amazing) to Sensational Soups, through Family Favourites (the best section of the book), to Something Special, and Desserts and Drinks, ‘Slow Cooker Simple’ covers all the bases. I came away surprised you could make so much in a slow cooker. I had thought, from my previous experience, that all slow cooker cooking was limited to mushy brown lentil stews. How wrong I was.
From the same publisher series, but more specifically aiming at the budget-conscious, comes ‘Family Food for a Steal: 50 simple, quick and delicious recipes’ Edited by Kyle Cathie ($19.99 from New Holland).
Our pick is the Mexican Black Bean Soup, below.
The fabulously-titled ‘Help! There’s a Stove in My Kitchen’ did make me smile.
Author Annabel Frere includes over 170 recipes designed to get you started in the kitchen. This would be an ideal gift for those leaving home or going flatting or even adults like myself who don’t seem to have picked up the basics! With a youthful design it is aimed at the young at heart. I liked that it also utilises budget ingredients so it is attainable to all, and uses a small number of them so you don’t feel daunted by a list as long as your leg before you even begin. ‘Help! There’s a Stove in My Kitchen’ costs $39.99 and is distributed in New Zealand by New Holland.
