For the second half of our work experience day, we had the pleasure of visiting Albert Park Cafe at 18 Kitchener Street. We met with the current owner and head-chef, Holly, who gave us some background information on the cafe’s history. Albert Park Cafe has been around for a long time and due to its significant existence period, Holly said that quite often customers realised that they had visited the cafe as regulars when they were in university, dating back at least 15 years. Interestingly, a customer once bought in a picture and informed her of its previous use as a broom shop. Over the years the shop had varying owners but in 2010 Holly took over. Making a number of interior changes, including the placement of chocolate coloured wooden floorboards from her grandfathers farm, the theme of the decor was decided- timeless and simplistic.
In keeping with the decorative theme, the fresh and organic menu shed new light onto the cafe’s extensive repertoire. The friendly and inviting staff quickly took our orders and delivered them at an equally prompt rate which was great to see despite the lunch-time rush. We were just as pleased with the high-quality dishes that we received. We began with two iced- coffees and a cinnamon brioche to share.
In just enough time, Tatjana’s eggs benedict served with mushrooms, bacon, spinach and whole-grain bread arrived with my granola which included seasonal fruits and greek yoghurt.
Both were entirely delightful. The exquisite combination of varying flavours left us with empty plates and a feeling of satisfaction. We were pleased to find out that with the new owner, came a new kitchen which has brought new life to the cafe with a seasonal menu and cabinet of food that differs each day.
Overall we would recommend it to anyone interested in a cosy and high-quality cafe with a lovely view- in particular, to anyone who is visiting the Auckland Art Gallery as it is a 30 second walk from the gallery and perfect for a quick stop or a quiet lunch.
