An exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the beauty tests for Zambesi and Nom*D at The Marr Factory with Stephen Marr at Golden Dawn…
LEADING (EDGE) LADIES
For decades now local fashion lovers have been able to rely on New Zealand labels Zambesi and Nom*D to fulfil most any desire they may have for fashion that’s unique and unexpected, reflecting “the cool, considered gaze of the fashion outsider” as Nom*D themselves put it.
This season – for the second year – both labels join a total of five leading design houses showing their current spring/summer 2013/14 collections at The Marr Factory series at Auckland’s Golden Dawn. Kicking off this Sunday 25 August and regarded by some as a warm-up to New Zealand Fashion Week, it’s a public event with a party atmosphere and just 150 tickets per show.
Thread.co.nz was invited to an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the beauty tests for both labels in preparation for their shows. You don’t necessarily have to interpret the looks literally; take an idea or a detail and try it out next time you are rocking a ‘cool outsider’ look.

Below: Dasha from Vanity Walk, before hair and makeup. This is the first time she’s modelled for Nom*D. Designer Margarita Robertson and stylist Karen Inderbitzen-Waller said with a laugh that "the test model always looks best on the night, because the hair and makeup have been designed on her."

From left: hairstylist Sophy Phillips (Stephen Marr) looks at inspiration shots on her laptop while stylist Karen, M.A.C makeup artist Kiekie Stanners, model Dasha and designer Margi check out makeup shots on Kiekie’s phone.

There’s no shortage of smiles throughout the morning. At far right you can see Zambesi stylist Dayne Johnston in conversation with Stephen Marr Creative Director Lauren Gunn.

Even though this is a test, there’s a tight schedule to adhere to and call times to be respected, as six looks will be finalised today. Kiekie Stanners works on Dasha’s Nom*D eyemakeup.
