INOA by L’Oreal is a salon hair colour without ammonia meaning clients with sensitivity can colour safely without reactions, and enjoy longer-lasting colours to boot. I try INOA at Bettjemans salon in Kohimarama, Auckland.
Bettjemans introduced INOA in March before its May 2010 general release and colourist Tiffany Harley, pictured left, is now doing her third colours on the very first clients and can really tell the difference.
"I find that their colour retention is far better, and their hair is noticeably softer" Tiffany says.
"I am changing all my clients over to INOA now."
Below: My before shot with faded copper red and regrowth. Porous hair ends often go darker as they absorb more colour, but INOA evens out the colour absorption. It covers 100% of grey hair.
All clients get a drinks menu to enjoy in the salon during the 35 minute processing time. I was so into UK Vogue the time flew right by.
Below: Mixing INOA. There’s no strong chemical smell, in fact there’s no smell whatsoever. Tiffany tells people, "It’s like pudding!" of the strawberry mousse-like paste.
It is a three step process: OLEO gel, Oxydant Riche, and tiny colourant tubes.
Painting it on to the hair roots.
In layman’s terms, it’s an oil based product and repels water which causes damage when it gets into the cuticle. INOA keeps the hair cuticle sealed and with its amino acids, hair is in better condition. Because it’s oil based, it has to be emulsified to remove it after processing. The "Day Emulsifying Process" involves gently massaging product off the hair. It changes its consistency to a milky fluid and removes the oil-based product from the hair and it’s then easy to wash out. Another advantage is how much less stained skin is.
The after shot – the final result.
Hair is high-shine and gets better with each subsequent colour. As you know, hair colours can really damage hair, but INOA restores it. After five colours, your hair is back to the condition of virgin hair.
Below: Check out the shine!
My hair feels really soft, and because it’s ammonia-free, unlike regular colours which can react, there was no painful tingling, just some very slight warmth about fifteen minutes into processing.
Tiffany says, "the biggest change is with clients who previously had sensitivity and now have no tingling at all."
I’d give INOA 9/10 for regrowth coverage and would recommend to anyone who colours their hair regularly, especially those who have sensitivity.
