The top knot has reigned supreme over hairstyles for the past couple of seasons, with parties and events seeing more than a few girls showing up with a pile-up on top.

Now, the direction from international catwalks and hair fashion trends is for volume to have shifted from the top to the bottom; from the crown to the nape of the neck. Hence the new looks, featured below. These four new looks replace the original looks on their menu, with some classic looks remaining. Their idea is that changing them out will keep the salon looks fresh and up-to-date with hair trends.

Kelly Latu and Mana Dave, Creative Directors at Pony Xpress, talk us through the new looks. Mana describes them as “a modern take on some iconic hairstyles to complement this season’s fashion trends."

“We’ve seen braids for a number of seasons now, this season we’ve channelled the inner bohemian spirit with a nod to the 70’s. The ‘Heidi’ braid is soft, wispy and offset to modernise."

Kelly’s take on the classical Chignon is the ‘Sienna’. “For an occasion when you want timeless beauty, this is the perfect style –a soft side-part with hair pulled into a bun, low at the nape."

The ‘Nicole’ side pony is a fusion of eras. “The 80s side pony goes vintage with the 20’s inspired wave through the front that cascades into the ponytail itself” says Mana.

Even the iconic beehive has been given a modern overhaul with the ‘Audrey’ look. “We’ve created a rougher texture with lots of volume. It looks amazing with the hot catwalk accessory, the over scale bow or even a simple ribbon."

And if these menu looks aren’t you, the team at Pony Xpress can customise one for you. The menu looks take just 30 minutes, priced from $35.

Pony Xpress is a capsule-style salon inside the Glasson concept store, 237 Broadway, Newmarket. Book online at www.ponyxpress.co.nz or phone 09 520 5086. The new looks are available from 4 June 2011.
