Do you think New Zealanders need to up their game a little when attending formal events? It’s hard enough figuring out what to wear – high fashion, traditional formal gowns, even trouser suits on women.

And how do you do your hair for an event, anyhow?

As I’m attending the Moet & Chandon Red Carpet event "Moet Amongst the Stars" on the rooftop of Rydges Hotel this Friday, I thought we’d ask Mana Dave of BLAZE Salon in Newmarket about hair tips for getting glammed up for the red carpet.

The invite read, "Red Carpet Glamour" for the party, and they are having guests walk a red carpet as they arrive so we want to be looking good!

RED CARPET HOT TIPS

*Ride the wave – Channel Aussie diva Kylie Minogue at the recent Aria awards and wear your hair in a tousseled do. To create this look at home, throw your hair into heated rollers, then remove and lightly brush out to soften the curl. For added sexiness, put in a soft side part and hold in place with Redken’s Forceful hairspray.

*Go vintage – Kiwi songstress Kimbra channeled this vibe when she accepted her Aria award with a Betty Boo inspired bob shape with lots of volume and curl. This look works really well with a full fringe and you may want to get a hand from your stylist to pull this vintage do off really well.

*Keep it clean –Think smooth and streamlined like Kim K’s sleek updo for the Primetime Emmy Awards. This is a great option when you still haven’t quite decided on the perfect outfit as it it’s really versatile and it’s simple enough to pull together at home. Pull all of your hair back into a low ponytail and secure. Spritz the ponytail with spray and now begin to wrap it back onto itself in a knot and secure with bobbypins. Another spritz of spray and your do is done.

So, there we have it – red carpet hair. Sorted. Now, what to wear?
