It was another sparkling winter afternoon when I ducked into X.O. bar at Sky City to experience the new season nail colours from OPI, inspired by America and its rich cultural and physical landscape.

The collection is heavy on wearable shades, but lacks the lightness I was looking for this spring, perhaps the only downside to piggybacking launches with the northern hemisphere.

In saying that, ‘French Quarter for your Thoughts’ is exactly the chic shade of heather grey I have been scouting all winter. Score!

Along with rich navy ‘Road House Blues’ and muted ‘A-Taupe the Space Needle’, there are plenty of options for the season’s wannabe ‘garçonne‘.

The nice thing about wearing these shades into spring is that a darker nail looks best at the end of a long expanse of skin, but you can recreate the same effect in winter by wearing a slim-fitting sleeve that stops at the wrist.

My pick for summer toes is the red/orange/pink hybrid ‘I Eat Mainely Lobster’, guaranteed to hold its own against any of Kathryn Wilson’s eye-popping tropical hued sandals.

But if you are coveting a sugary pastel for your summer nails, seek out the current ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ shades and stash one away for the warmer months. Then you can wear the ‘Touring America’ collection now and feel smug that you are actually a season ahead of everyone else.

The OPI Touring America collection is available from August, RRP$24.90 each.
