If you Google art deco, you’ll come up with the town of Nelson, and the architecture movement of the 1920s, and this: the makeup mega-brand, ARTDECO.

The German brand of colour cosmetics renowned for its refillable compacts has arrived in NZ, exclusively at Farmers. It’s a really big deal – it’s sold in 70 countries and 17 products are sold every minute. In fact it’s surprising that more people in New Zealand haven’t heard of it, but all that’s about to change, with the advent of the brand coming to Farmers beauty counters nationwide from 8th November 2013.

Verity Griffiths – a makeup artist who was AHFA Australian Makeup Artist of the Year 2010 – and who was born in NZ – presented ARTDECO to beauty media at the makeup launch presented by BDM Grange today at Ponsonby Central.

The heart of the ARTDECO phenomenon is the refillable compact. This is a response to the obvious problem of compacts being not entirely suited to what you want. Women often buy a compact for one, many two colours, and the others are wasted; unused. As BDM Grange’s Tineke said, "I only have one colour of eyebrows, so I only need to use one colour in the eyebrow palette!"

How does it work? You buy a refillable magnetised box and build your own palette. Colours have numbers, rather than names, and are matte or shine. I chose a bronze, a beautiful warm brown, and a graphite grey, to start my compact. There are also brow powders, blushers, nailpolishes, and lipsticks in the colour range, as well as Mascara Base, Magic Fix, Hot Chilli Lip Booster, Lash Growth Activator and more, in their beauty line. Their highly sought-after Eyeshadow Base has become the range’s best-selling product and I can’t wait to try mine out. Verity insisted it was so powerful that we’d better be sure where we are putting our eyeshadow- cos it aint gonna move!
