Normally brands named after someone’s nickname don’t work out well.

They can sound naive and not at all like a proper grown-up thing that one would expect to be available in 130 stores in 23 countries.

The exception is BECCA cosmetics. It’s turned out remarkably well for creator Rebecca Morrice Williams, who launched in London in October 2001, after 6 years of research and development.

Rebecca’s aim is for a luxurious cosmetic line that appears "natural; not made-up," hence the model’s natural look, pictured left.

Thread tried out the paraben-free mineral make-up powder and cosmetics. My first impression was how nice the packaging is for a natural line; it is a deep chocolate hue with brushed metal accents. The mineral powder resembles a tiny hubcap.

Their 3-Step Skin Perfecting Make-Up System has been developed to look super natural, yet still provide coverage where it’s needed, and lasts all day.

In addition to the foundation system there is a full range of cosmetics for eyes, lips, and cheeks.

In 2009 Rebecca introduced BECCA’s first range of lipsticks.

BECCA’s Sheer Tint Lip Colours are nude shades in pinks and browns, scented with a natural light vanilla/caramel scent, in a paraben-free, moisturizing formula containing Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Honey and other essential fatty acids with natural anti-oxidants to leave lips soft and moisturized. Rather than a complete cover the lipstick gives a sheer wash of colour with a soft shine.

Thread tried the BECCA Boudoir Skin Mineral Powder Foundation with pure mineral pigments in a pale nude shade, Beloved. This is one of my favourite mineral powders ever. I could build up coverage to achieve the heavier coverage I wanted, over my skin pigmentation and some uneven skin tone I have.

I liked that the powder contains natural anti-oxidant vitamins A, B, C and E and it protects the skin with natural SPF pigments including zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I really liked that is it free of parabens and phenoxyethanol, oil, fragrance, alcohol, chemical dyes, talc and other fillers.

I looked like this after using the mineral make up – I wish.

I also tried the Beach Tint cheek and lip colour, a small yet perfectly formed tube of colour that looks really intense when it squeezes out onto your fingertips, but rubs in to a sheer hue. I have been using this every day and it looks like a healthy flush on cheeks. A little goes a long way, so start small.

You can also dab it onto lips, but I think it would be better on much younger women, as it looked barely there and I like a more moisturizing lip formulation.

I really liked the Rejuvenating Primer Anti Age. It has a very thick, white creamy consistency – more like a luxury night creme in feel – and thus more moisturizing in feel than any other primer I’ve tried. I used it under the Mineral powder make-up.

I also tried the Tinted Moisturizer SPF25+ in Sand, which gave a fresh-faced glowing finish and ideal for younger women or those wanting a much lighter look. I have to say how nice the rubber lids feel in the hand.

The whole range was very luxurious and a pleasure to hold – as well as have on the skin. And the beautiful thing is, you’re not sacrificing safety for beauty, as it is all paraben-free.
