We look at the latest BB creams and tinted moisturisers from Oasis Beauty NZ, Elizabeth Arden, new look Aveeno, and an old favourite by, Dr Hauschka…
Why do women go for BB creams and tinted moisturisers?
The easy answer is that it’s well – just that: easy. It’s a one-stop multi-tasker to apply as you set out on your busy day that covers a multitude of uses (and sins!) Women want to cover imperfections and have a smooth complexion and some skin protection while moisturising. On the whole they give a natural – not heavy – medium coverage with a dewy – not matte – finish. We recommend using a translucent powder to finish if you want a longer-lasting foundation and to set your makeup. The Elizabeth Arden and Aveeno products both have SPF of 30 using chemical sunscreens and titanium dioxide as a physical sunscreen. The Oasis and Dr. Hauschka creams don’t specify a SPF rating but use natural sunscreens of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, respectively, as physical / mineral sunscreens.
Sceptics might suggest that there’s no difference between tinted moisturisers and BB creams and the new name is nothing but a marketing stunt. Perhaps that’s true but what does it it matter – if they work for you, then a rose by any name would smell as sweet. Others find they don’t give enough coverage and end up taking longer applying concealer to problem areas not concealed by the lighter coverage. But they are ideal for younger skins, people with great clear skins, casual days and weekends and for every day when you don’t want a heavy makeup look.
First up, an old favourite.
Dr. Hauschka Toned Day Cream is a world-famous tinted day cream from this much-loved German skincare and cosmetics brand. With one colour, like Henry Ford’s car that came "in any colour you like as long as it’s black", Dr Hauschka Toned Day Cream suits all skin tones. It blends beautifully, really beautifully, and feels superbly comfortable on my skin. It’s aimed at mature, dry and normal skin types to hydrate and protect while giving a smooth finish. Like all their range, it is NATRUE/BDIH certified natural and organic skincare and makeup. The Toned Day Cream is $73 from department stores and health food stores. See www.drhauschka.co.nz for stockists.
Oasis Beauty based in Oxford, New Zealand, are the first in New Zealand to make a BB cream, and one of the first worldwide to make a natural, silicone-free BB cream. Oasis natural BB creams are also free of fragrance, talc, parabens, and are cruelty-free. The three colours in their first formulation are, from light to dark, Cream, Honey, and Caramel, with Honey recommended to suit most people. I found them ideal for pink skintones, so as a yellow/golden beige undertone, I’ll be looking forward to their next formulations of yellow bases, out in a couple of months. They do appear pink on application and settle into the skin but if like me you’re a yellow, then wait with bated breath for the new ones on their way. They contain Vitamins B5, C and E, pomegranate, red grape skin extract, hyaluronic acid, jojoba, rosehip, calendula, shea butter, and sweet almond, and are $49.95 at www.healthpost.co.nz and at many locations throughout NZ. See their website www.oasisbeauty.co.nz for stockist information.
Elizabeth Arden Multi Targeted BB Cream is new from their Visible Difference line (so-called because it aims to make a visible difference to skin in as little as six days) and comes with a SPF of 30. The 30ml small sized tube is handy for purse and travel and I think would replace foundation and sunscreen in springtime with one product. (Note: use a high SPF sunscreen in direct sunlight still.) It is incredibly smooth and creamy to apply. It has one of the best coverages (medium coverage) of a BB Cream I’ve ever tried. Really smooth – with a beautiful finish. It retails from Elizabeth Arden counters for $50 in three shades: shade 1 for fair with pink undertones, shade 2 for medium with golden beige undertones (me), and shade 3 for deep with golden undertones.
Aveeno’s new look Tinted Moisturizer is a great value product available everywhere at the lowest price point of all those featured here at $24.99. It is very sheer so would be well suited to good skins and younger skins, and those seeking less heavy coverage.
