We try out the new season releases from Maybelline New York; not only bargains – all under $35 – but innovative with a sponge-head foundation, their latest two-ended mascara, and baked marbled eyeshadows.

Instant Age Rewind Eraser Treatment Makeup $34.99

Anyone who remembers the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, Eraser, will get a thrill from saying "You’ve been erased!"in a deadpan monotone as they smooth this foundation tip over their fine lines and wrinkles with smug satisfaction. I tried Creamy Natural which was a nice light nude, with SPF18 sunscreen. The first thing you notice is the fluffy tip; a sponge applicator that you click around to dispense product. I dapped it on the five areas of my face and then smoothed it out.

The microfibre sponge is supposed to be more efficient than fingertips or a makeup brush at allowing coverage to a higher level. You don’t wash the sponge, it says it is protected by an anti-microbial system. The formula contains collagen and antioxidant-rich goji berries.

Colour Cosmos Baked Duos $15.99

It’s a dome of two halves. Colour Cosmos Baked Duos are a convex spherical eyeshadow of two sides; a solid colour in a matte finish, and a marbled lighter colour with pearlescent effects. Navy Narcissist, pictured above left, is a inky navy blue with a pale to mid blue other half. Carbon Frost, pictured above right, is a black matte with a pink marbled half. The innovative new method to achieve the marbling is to "swirl and bake the blend of uncrushed pearls with pure pigments" to get a multi-dimensional colour. Use them by themselves, contrast them, or combine them for many possibilities.

XXL Pro Mascara $24.49

People either love or hate the two step mascara; it is either a fabulous lash-building step, or just one more step in your beauty routine before you rush out the door/the traffic lights change. You know what? You can choose whether or not you do the white lash-building step, but I like to.

The XXL Pro range has four mascaras to meet your priority eyelash need, whether that be for curl, volume, length or intense black colour. I tried Pro Volume, said to intensify lashes for six times the volume and 40% longer lashes. It went on smoothly without clumping and did add to the width as well as the length. A good all-purpose mascara and under $25 too.

Eye Studio Silk Glam Quad Shadows $22.99

The idea behind Eye Studio Silk Glam Quad Shadows is for women to play at being make-up artist at home, creating a smoky eye or a cat eye in four easy steps, with the four complementary shades flowing from lightest to darkest in each compact. Most women will suit the neutrals in Copper Chic, pictured above left, and the pretty greys and mauves of Legendary Lilac, above right, are perfect for spring. The "silk" in the title refers to the shadows being three times softer than traditional eye shadows so they are feather light and easy to blend and comfortable to wear.
