Mascara is my desert island make-up of choice. I simply love the stuff. My husband rolls his eyes as I twitter with delight in new mascara ads pointing out the next level of eyelash defining technology.

So I am loving the new Revlon CustomEyes Mascara for its originality and cunning. You just need to pick between ‘beautifully defined’ or ‘glamorous and dramatically long’ and turn the dial on the cap. Tough I know. (And there isn’t a ‘both’ setting. I looked.)

The rows of bristles change formation to change the look of your lashes. And blow me down – there really is a difference! Both settings achieve a nice look, but I personally liked the glam version.

The weather has been rather brutal of late here in Auckland and I did get a tiny bit of flaking after a long humid day, but not enough to put me off the product. I liked that you could put a couple of coats on and it didn’t clump. That meant a quick touch up at a friend’s wedding went well and I didn’t look over the top.

The CustomEyes Eyeshadow and Liner palettes ($31.95) are fantastic too. I am severely lacking in confidence when it comes to eye colour, and normally apply dull brown lightly during the day and more dull brown if heading out at night.

So I appreciated the ideas for applications on the back of the box showing where to apply the 6 colours in each set. I was brave and used four. And I don’t think I looked like I had a black eye! The colours are gorgeous, beautifully designed by their global artistic director, and were extra easy to apply thanks to shea butter and jojoba in the formula.

I have tried the ‘Sweet Innocence’ palette a few times this week, but am saving the ‘Smoky Sexy’ for a hot date where the lights are low!

I really like the look of the ‘Metallic Chic’ palette too now I have started getting crazy with actual colour. I would say go for it and try something new. It’s a good quality product from a brand you can trust. You might just surprise yourself and, like me, shake off some of those boring, dull brown make-up habits.
