I try out cheap thrills for summer brights for hair, lips and nails from Essie nail polish’s summer 2012 collection of Brazilian brights, Kevin Murphy Color.bug and Australis Show Stopper Gloss Sticks.

First up, Kevin Murphy Color.bug…

These talc and mica coloured blocks of pink, purple and orange chalk, or "hair shadow" as they can them, are a cheap and low-commitment way to punk-up your locks for the weekend and wash it out for work on Monday.

Selling at $25 each at Kevin Murphy stockists throughout New Zealand from October, they give instant colour you wipe on, rub in, and wash out. It’s basically like an eye shadow for your hair.

I did a faint colour but you could keep applying it for a more intense colour.

Wear a towel over your clothes so you don’t look like Strawberry Shortcake.

It is multi-use, and an application only uses a tiny smidge, so this would last for ages.

Below: I colour.bugged Nezumi my Tonkinese cat while she slept. It came straight out with a wet flannel, but she did look quite fashion-forward while it lasted.

Colour your nails…

Essie nail polish’s summer 2012 collection of Brazilian brights was inspired by Essie Weingarten’s most memorable summer getaways, which obviously include very hot Southern American destinations, but why not wear them on a New Zealand beach – or an Auckland office, for that matter?

Nothing cheers me up faster than nails the colour of traffic light cocktails.

Essie Summer Collection 2011 is available in selected pharmacies, department stores and salons nationwide from mid-November for $24.50 for full sizes and the limited edition cube of four 5ml minis, pictured below, is $42.50.

Gloss your lips…

Australis Show Stopper Gloss Sticks are the answer to the slippery gloss problem; a highly pigmented lip stain with a gloss finish. So, basically, a lipliner, lipstick and lipgloss all in one in a stick that provides a solid coverage in a crayon you can sharpen. They retail at $15 at Farmers, Kmart and selected pharmacies nationwide.

Australis also have a new lip gloss tube out, Mint Condition lip gloss, that is heavily fragranced with mint for freshness. I’m wearing the delightfully monikered Mrs Mellonwellen’s Melons. They’re also $15 each and there are 7 shades in all.
