Thread.co.nz met Miranda Bond, the inspiring founder of Inika cosmetics and found out how she got interested in natural health, overcame her infertility, detoxed her life, and subsequently started the successful organic cosmetics line, Inika.
This pretty, petite woman is actually a powerhouse, and is devoted to positive change.
British-born Miranda came to Australia and New Zealand 13 years ago. Wandering around Wellington one day, she found herself in an organic store and, as she suffered from endometriosis, she picked up the book Hormone Heresy by Dr. Sherrill Sellman. This book turned out to be revelationary for her. Miranda learned that so many women’s problems are due to the estrogen dominance of synthetic hormones e.g. the pill, and hormone disruptors such as phthalates and parabens.
Her steps to action were three-fold. She removed hormone disruptors from her beauty regime, throwing out all her old toiletries. She found a natural progesterone cream – not easy, as it is not patented as a drug, so there’s little profit in it, so doctors aren’t trained in it. And thirdly, she changed her diet and detoxed her life.
Miranda’s infertility ended and she conceived and now has a 9 year old daughter, Isla. She decided to dedicate her life to educating women. She held community workshops, met mothers groups and with one of the women she met, Jenny, formed Inika Cosmetics. Jenny had a son with allergies and together they formed a not-for-profit organisation ThrivingHealthyWomen.com to share information they found out along their journeys.
After receiving many emails from women about finding genuinely natural make-up – as nothing performed well and was stylish – they started Inika. The rest is history. It is now beating established brands like Chanel, Dior and L’Oreal in customer surveys and winning multiple awards.
Inika Liquid Mineral Foundation won the best foundation award in ACP Media survey – the first time a non-organic brand has won in a non-organic category.
Their biggest seller is the mineral powder. They use no micronised titanium dioxide. One downside to being so organic is they can’t have a bright red lippie; red carmine colour comes from crushed beetles!
Miranda’s hot tip is to look out for Tamanu Oil. It regenerates skincells, and is even used in treating leprosy and burned skin.
Inika is used by many celebrities worldwide including actress Jamie King and designer Stella McCartney as well as countless women interested in what they are putting in their skin. New Zealand is a huge market for Inika as – despite our low volume sales in a small population – NZ women are clued-up in eco issues and natural awareness and shop green.
Inika Cosmetics is now available in 16 countries, is certified Halal and is launching in United Arab Emirates. It grew 85% last year in the global recession!
