Just check out Iris Apfel here, in her astrakhan wool coat and arms laden with beaded bracelets topped by her vivid red lips and peacock eyes. Isn’t she amazing?
Or fabulous, as a New Yorker might be more prone to say. This woman after all is revered there; the iconic stylish American Mrs Iris Apfel (b. 1921) has been the subject of her own exhibition at the Met, after all.
The bright colours are very hot right now but are not what you expect your typical nonagenarian to be wearing. But she is no average 90 year old.
It’s wonderful – and typical of their famously inclusive policies in general – that M.A.C use Iris herself in the ad campaign, rather than shooting on a young model old enough to be her great grand-daughter.
Like the Met’s exhibition in 2005, entitled ‘Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel’, her new collection of colours for M.A.C is all named for birds. There’s the bright, matte lipsticks: Pink Pigeon, Scarlet Ibis and Party Parrot, a lustre lipstick in Flamingo, and amplified lipstick in Morange. The limited edition collection will be out in New Zealand from 23 January 2012 for just six weeks so fly on in.
