I met Lori Taylor, Global Pro Lead Makeup Artist of Smashbox in New Zealand for two days to talk to beauty media about the new season collection entitled, ‘Love Me’.

Lori is completely charming and so funny she was like watching a stand-up comic. She’s also the make-up artist with America’s Next Top Model and Smashbox is ANTM’s cosmetics sponsor now.

‘Love Me’ is named for the grafitti-style logo that New York artist Curtis Kulig says he’s now drawn about a million times, and which has embellished the packaging and lid frames of the eyeshadow compacts in this new range from Smashbox.

It’s not only the name and inspiration for the packaging though; the Paint Pen Eyeliner is a replica of his black marker pen, and the red lipstick is a Pantone match for the red paint in his artwork.

"If you’re new to wearing red lipstick, start with a sheer red, then a primary red" she recommends.

"I like to put mascara on top AND bottom lashes, not just the top. It’s like wearing a bra and panty. You do BOTH!"

Lori says Los Angelos women come in for a makeup early in the day and without fail ask for a smoky eye, she laughs. "Smoky is a technique, not a colour. It can be blue, green…Keep the concept, but be open!"

"It’s a ‘slurry’ formula" Lori Taylor said about the eyeshadow. "It’s very soft and creamy and it gives twice as much pigment and it can be used wet, or dry. There’s less drop-down; no glitter landing on your cheeks. It goes on and it sticks."

"I try to challenge people to use ALL the colours in a palette cos they’re designed to go together. I put pistachio in the inner circles of eyes to create a halo." Lori says women want to wear these colours but don’t know how, so Smashbox created a "paint by numbers" guide and a QR code on the back of the compact you scan with a smart phone.

Lori Taylor also encourages older women to use colour – "not blue like my Grandmother!" – and get out of their comfort zone.

‘Love Me’ is available from Smashbox counters from March 2013 and online at www.smashboxcosmetics.co.nz and www.mybeautystore.com. The Love Me Paint Pen Eyeliner retails for $48, Love Me Blush in ‘Idolize Me’ $48, Love Me Lip Enhancing Gloss $45 in ‘Adore Me’ fuschia and ‘Charm Me’ nude pink. The hero of the range for me is the Eyeshadow Palette at $54. There are two colourways; a practical brown palette called ‘Admire Me’ or a more fun navy, pistachio and bronze colourway called ‘Entice Me.’

I’ll take Lori’s recommendation and branch out into colour. Pass the pistachio please.
