Unlike liquid foundations, brush-on powder foundations have the benefit of allowing you to regulate the amount of coverage you want to achieve by gradually building up layers, while still allowing your skin to breathe.

Many powder foundations come with a kabuki brush for a lighter touch than a sponge pad applicator as with creme or beauty cake foundations. Brush application does make for a very even coverage without any streaks.

Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder’s pitch is a powder that reduces fine lines and wrinkles. The anti-aging powder contains pure gold, 48 minerals, 11 amino acids and a powerful peptide to hydrate skin all day. Clinical studies showed a 33% decrease in the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes after ten minutes, and a 67% decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles overall after 6 weeks of use.

The box came with this Photo Finish primer sample which I applied first. It has a travel brush which was actually very good; soft bristles yet dense enough to apply well.

The powder is oil-free, talc-free, and paraben-free. It comes as little surprise that it was the winner of the HBA Award for Best Prestige Packaging as the compact feels and looks good. Grinding the powder is strangely satisfying and may be addictive.

The daily grind: Step 1 and 2 grinding the fresh powder, below.

I used three grinds to cover my face. I found I still needed a concealor.

Below: the finished result on me when professionally applied by make-up artist Helen at the Smashbox concept store in Ponsonby Road using Photo finish, Halo in Light and Concealor, and the 3-step Contour Kit.

Smashbox Halo Yellow is a colour-correcting powder to reduce the appearance of redness and minimize the signs of aging by evening-out skin tone while providing all-day moisturization. As with Halo powder above, the shaver lets you get the perfect amount of powder fresh each time. It is also oil-free, talc-free, and paraben-free. Clinical studies reported that 96% saw a noticeable reduction in appearance of redness immediately, 67% saw a decrease in appearance of fine lines and wrinkles after 6 weeks, and 33% saw a decrease in appearance of wrinkles around eyes after 10 minutes.
