Carey Marx – Scoundrel

If you’re not a sensitive soul, and you like to see a good debunking, then Carey Marx is your man in this year’s comedy festival.

Marx has the uncanny skill to both charm and horrify his audience; he lulls you in with gentle banter, his dangerously cheeky smile and relaxed introduction and then when you’re not expecting any controversy he unleashes memoirs about unwitting sexual initiations or drops the C-word. Marx is a paradox on the stage; his performances are invariably delightful even if the subject matter is not. Yet, this is all very delicate when you consider how one of his shows last year ‘Careyness’ was really an exposé of all that is depraved in the world of stand-up comedy.

Scoundrel sees Marx true to form. It is more autobiographical and anecdotal than his previous performances in New Zealand. He harnesses his history as a practitioner of ‘mysteries’ and systematically debunks the world of unknowns. The show itself is book-ended by mystery and demystification respectively.

Carey Marx never fails to deliver seamless, well-executed and absorbing stand-up shows with an addictive mix of sweetness and cruelty. Unlike the homeopathy that he enthusiastically annihilates, Marx’s cocktail of comedy is best enjoyed undiluted and that’s what you will get for one hour (that you will wish was two).
