The dancing, costumes, and set design were equally fabulous at today’s performance of The TOWER Season of Cinderella in Auckland I attended at Bruce Mason Theatre in Takapuna.

Sometimes, one out-weighs the other; luscious sets but poor performances, or skilled dancing but dated and ugly costumes.

This Royal New Zealand Ballet show was faultless.

Some of the highlights for me were:

– little girls dressed up in ballet and princess dresses to go with their mothers and grandmothers.
– the ballroom scene with eight pairs of dancers in pink and black vintage strapless dresses. Sigh. Just beautiful.
– the Big Reveal of Cinderella’s Swarvoski tutu.
– the Fairy Godmother’s pink and grey tulle dress.
– the clowning antics of the stepsisters providing light relief to the laughter and delight of children.
– Sir Jon Trimmer as a Royal Shoemaker.
– the rosebush theme seen in the set design below.

What could have been better? I think a cheaper, shorter performace at midday aimed at children and families would be amazing as $85 and two hours twenty is a lot of time and money. The family next to us with tired little girls had to leave before the final act (I’m sure they knew Prince Charming found Cinders) which was a shame.

I highly recommend you get seats if you can. I give Cinderella 10 out of 10.
