Face the tape

If you can only see one show in the comedy festival – make it The Boy with Tape on his Face. You will regret it if you miss out find he has left our shores again for the UK. The show is exhilarating, cheeky and unique…

The Boy with Tape on His Face- Sam Wills

Just like during the show, words cannot express how transcendentally funny The Boy with Tape on his Face is to watch.

Not only does his humour transcend language, gender and age – it spans several comedy eras and will continue to draw laughter from crowds for generations to come. Sure, the references to popular culture will have to be updated, but the inherently childlike nature of this slapstick, Vaudeville, silent clowning means it will never stop eliciting pure laughter.

The Boy employs a variety of props, music and lighting cues to supplement his act, and the rest of the comedy lies in his expressive face and that delicate moment in which the collective audience psyche switches from perplexed wonder to sudden and enthusiastic understanding.

The Boy has a keen aptitude for selecting participants from the crowd. The show is vulnerable to the unpredictability of human behaviour and may not work as well if his "assistants" are too shy, or boisterously confident. There is something so perfect about the Kiwi comedy-goers for this type of performance.

Everyone understands the fear at being called on stage – we are a shy bunch at the end of the day – which makes it all the more beautiful to see someone embrace a bit of silliness on a Tuesday night. People tend to loosen up once they realise how light-hearted and fun the whole show is – comedians can do a lot worse to humiliate their crowds when they are at liberty to speak.

If you can only see one show in the comedy festival – make it The Boy with Tape on his Face. You will regret it if you miss out find he has left our shores again for the UK. The show is exhilarating, cheeky and unique.
