If Hannah wasn’t performing as a stand-up, her comedy could easily migrate into the sitcom genre, because for an hour you are introduced to her quirky social shortcomings, her background of small-town Smithton…
Hannah Gadsby
Mrs Chuckles
Hannah Gadsby wanders onto the stage at the basement and matter-of-factly informs the crowd that she’s never been criticised for peaking too soon.
She then quickly reassures us that despite being a reluctant small-talker, she’s good at what she does on a comedy stage. This isn’t just a rare moment of vanity in the self-effacing comedian’s set; it’s really true. There is nothing lackadaisical about her quietly casual delivery, her writing is cleverly crafted and the execution is faultless.
If Hannah wasn’t performing as a stand-up, her comedy could easily migrate into the sitcom genre, because for an hour you are introduced to her quirky social shortcomings, her background of small-town Smithton in Tasmania and a series of truly fascinating vignettes from her meanderings through life.
Despite saying she has never excelled at communicating, Gadsby can paint the most enthralling pictures of the people she has known and observed with simply a few well-selected phrases and faces. You never stop laughing long enough to notice that the time is ticking a way.
Mrs Chuckles delivers an hour of professional stand-up, introducing us to wonderful characters and endearing herself to us in every possible way.
