Now in its tenth year, New Zealand Fashion Week has come a long way, baby.

Thread remembers the first one, back in the Auckland Town Hall, with just one room, not the many tents and offsite shows of today. Now for 2010 NZFW has announced its recession-beating biggest list of designers ever to show there.

NZFW Managing Director Pieter Stewart spoke to sponsors, designers and fashion industry media at the Westin Auckland Lighter Quay, official hotel of NZFW, at 3.30pm today, and unveiled the new campaign billboard created from the New Talent competition. Read about it here.

“2010 is all about celebration for the New Zealand fashion industry” said Stewart, “a lot has changed in the past ten years and NZFW has seen a lot of designers come and go in that time, but announcing a full schedule of designer shows, the most we have ever had, is something to celebrate as we look toward the next ten years. “

We were interested to hear that the three designers who have walked the walk on the catwalk (albeit offsite often) are Zambesi, Nom D and Trelise Cooper, return again in 2010 and are joined to our delight by old favourites, the fabulous WORLD.

Seven weddings and a retrospective: New to the schedule this year is a showcase of seven wedding designers put on by bridal magazine, NZ Weddings, and a ten year retrospective with a multi-media presentation both live and on screen of collections and film from the past decade.

Our favourite sustainable fashion label, Starfish, will hold fashion week’s first completely eco show. In 2009 they did a show with sustainable fashion and that extends this year to the show itself. They are well known and lauded for their use of sustainable practices and eco-friendly fabrics in production and now the entire catwalk show will be, as well.

The media frenzy following Richie Rich and Pamela Anderson in his A*Muse show in 2009 lead to "over a hundred mentions of New Zealand and fashion week in international press" said Stewart. This year, the less salatious and much more covered-up designs of Nicole Miller will represent the stars and stripes in Godzone.

Play it again, Sam. Back this year:

The New Generation Show will be sponsored by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PWC), who join the list of NZFW partners for the first time, giving new designers a chance to put on their own show during the week as well as putting them through a business boot camp.

Thread enjoyed the AgResearch show with its high-tech fabrics and wools back in 2008 with outfits made by designers and looks forward to seeing what they have to present again this year on their return to the flock.

Miromoda is also back for its second year, nurturing the development of the M?ori fashion industry’s future designers, by offering them the chance to show on the catwalk at NZFW.
