One of the most polarizing shows at NZ Fashion Week 2013 was COOP by Trelise Cooper.

I liked its new direction, but there were plenty who couldn’t get past the vinyl skirts and fur shorts.

If you’re a bit older, none of this will be new to you. I made vinyl jackets with faux fur bits back before there were any blogs, Google, or even emails. In fact we didn’t even call it faux, it was fake fur, and people would have pronounced ‘faux’ as ‘fax’, which there were plenty of.

The silhouette was boxy, with swingy Sixties tops, and hair caught up in metal chokers. I really liked the styling; it was quite editorial and lent a vaguely futuristic-and-sci-fi look to the models. Plus, they’d be fine if shot in the neck by model-hunting space aliens.

COOP just opened their new store next to The Department Store (Karen Walker, Top Shop and more) in Takapuna and are targeting the fashion-forward young women with trend-driven and colourful designs. The prints are admirably all designed by their in-house graphic designer so they have original prints. I especially liked the coloured snakeprint.

Was it all in good taste? Would I wear all of it? No. But at least it wasn’t boring. COOP by all accounts is trying to be fun and youthful without looking like everything else from an Australian chain store. And I think it’s succeeding. Throw anything you like at the vinyl skirts; at least it won’t stick.
