Day 1 of NZ Fashion Week started with Prime Minister John Key opening the event, we watched a Designer Selection Show, and crammed into a fashion week car…
Day 1 of NZ Fashion Week started with collecting our delegate bags and comparing notes on invites. Read all about it here.
Come the evening, we headed along to the Opening Ceremony to hear Prime Minister John Key officially open the event, graciously acknowledging Dame Pieter Stewart of NZ Fashion Week and her services to fashion – as well as some good jokes about his own daughter Stephanie Key being in the media for wearing food and not much else in her art school photographs. It went down a treat with the audience.
After the party, we headed upstairs to join the public at the ticketed Designer Selection Show, which really did kick fashion week off to a fantastic start, displaying a snippet from every NZFW designer. Opening the show was Bonds Underwear with beautiful plus-sized model Emily Trenberth, who had character and pizzazz and set the scene for the rest of the show. We hope to see her throughout the rest of the week.
Walking away from this show it is clear Fashion Week is going to go off in 2013. Even though labels only showed a glimpse of their current season and their next season looks, it’s obvious we’re not going to be disappointed with what’s to come.

Uh-oh, a model loses a shoe and darts backstage to fix it at Annah Stretton.

At the end of the evening we answered the question of how many people can be crammed into a fashion week car. Answer is 6. (Anonymous participants pictured below.)
See you tomorrow for the first day proper of NZ Fashion Week 2013, with shows from Twenty-Seven Names , COOP by Trelise Cooper, Lela Jacobs, Company of Strangers, Hailwood, Andrea Moore, and Zambesi.
