The weather gods were smiling on fashion as the sun came out and open toed shoes trod the pavements on Viaduct Events Centre on Tuesday 3rd September. After a blow dry at Blaze salon, I felt ready to take on the world – or at least, downtown Auckland.
We’re doing a daily Model of the Day post, photographed backstage for Thread by Seun Shote. Read about our first model of the day, Mary Maguet on Thread here.
The day’s first show was twenty-seven names with a Magritte-inspired collection called, "I’m Lost," drawing on the art school background of the designers from Wellington city. Photo Izzie Austin.
Next up was the colourful world of COOP by Trelise Cooper, with all the fun of the fair with a candy floss stand spinning sugary treats for guests queuing outside the big tent.

The third show of the day was Lela Jacobs AW13 collection entitled ‘de’; a deconstructed show where models walked slowly to a haunting live music accompaniment. The styling drew heavily from Where the Wild Things Are with crimped hair in stocking caps and white painted eyes. Our favourite piece was the inside-out shearling cape on the White Queen with a leather crown, and her printed paper coat. Elsewhere clothes were all black with dropped crotches, shoulder yokes bound on loosely rather than stitched together, and raw hems. Fabrics were highly textured with natural fibres. Next we hot-footed it down the road, via a massive detour due to roadworks, to the underground carpark of Sofitel Auckland for Company of Strangers.

A show’s venue has such a strong impact on a show and the setting, music and lighting give it its atmosphere. Photo Izzie Austin.
The darkened carpark lent the daytime show an edgier, night time feel. Designer Sara Aspinall delivered beautiful silk shirtdresses and floaty layers with a slightly goth-punk feel, and a new print of the season in a triangle design. Photo Izzie Austin.
Back to the venue and to the always-exciting backstage area, to hear about the makeup for Zambesi by MAC cosmetics. While backstage with the lovely M.A.C team, we ran into Adrian Hailwood. I’m holding the falcon emblem postcard from his show.
Andrea Moore used the swan motif to great effect in her show ‘Northern Night’, with golden swans appearing as zip pulls, and swans featuring in a pretty silk dress print. My personal pic was an amazing blue possum fur shoulder cape on a harness – very cool. Photo Kevin Robinson.

The Zambesi show was breathtaking in its staging; they revealed what is usually concealed- the backstage workings of a fashion show. Makeup artists – led by key MAC Artist Amber D – took to the back of the stage touching up lips and hair stylists from Stephen Marr sprayed hair as models got changed (actually models did go backstage for the changing bit) and then walked the runway.
