Fashion Week Australia Day 2

The show of the day however goes to the incredible Kate Sylvester whose ‘The Last Sitting’ collection inspired by the life of the iconic Marilyn Monroe was very clever and oh so covetable.

After a hectic first day of fabulous fashion, Day 2 of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia began with Karla Spetic, Ginger and Smart and Flannel showing their Spring/Summer 2013/14 collections. Special mention must be made to the amazing Ginger and Smart, who showed a stunning range of vibrant prints in gorgeous hues with lots of great dresses and separates to please a range of ages.

My first in person show of the day was Talulah, who showed a crisp, clean collection of modern garments and swimwear with a rainbow theme. The chic looks were accessorised with beautiful braided belts and bags with just a hint of sparkle. It was exactly the kind of pretty collection that’s totally wearable yet still stunning enough to get you noticed.

One of the most anticipated shows of the week, Ellery, was up next and showed an artfully constructed range of structured and voluminous silhouettes in a subdued colour palette. Jayson Brunsdon then showed a dazzling collection of elegant evening wear on-site next and he was ably followed by menswear label From Britten and the always charming Maticevski.

Below: Candace Lake from Vogue (in black), Photographer Phillip Oh (in green) and Susie Lau of Style Bubble (with camera), front row at Manning Cartell.

Manning Cartell were next (pictured below), with a strikingly lit collection on a very long runway in the shed next door to the main venue, which was a perfect deconstructed setting for a show filled with futurism and texture. The bonus of the runway being extra long was everyone got a great view, which was brilliant for getting to see the clever use of fabric and embellishments up close.

Presenting a stunning installation in the box space, Kahlo were up next, and were followed by the winsome Aje who showed a divine collection of intricate pieces with some amazing maxi dresses that looked like they would belong on a modern day Scarlett O’Hara.

The show of the day however goes to the incredible Kate Sylvester whose ‘The Last Sitting’ collection inspired by the life of the iconic Marilyn Monroe was very clever and oh so covetable. Taking her cue from the different elements in Marilyn’s life, right down to her different husbands’ professions, the range told the story of the bittersweet heroine in an intelligent way, for example the baseball stitching a reference to her legendary husband baseball star Joe DiMaggio.

With everything from blush silks and white linens to caramel leather on the runway, Kate Sylvester’s was a feminine, sexy and utterly delightful collection that had me wishing I could transfer every piece straight into my wardrobe.

Day 3 sees another busy day of shows with Lisa Ho and Alice McCall, my first shows in the morning and the two I’m most looking forward to.
