Highlights of Miromoda 2011

Miromoda showcased designs by Adrienne Whitewood, D’monic Intent, Tara Warren, Shona Tewhiao, Urban Maori, and Identi-Tee at a show held at New Zealand Fashion Week on Friday 2nd September.

Standouts at the show included Aroha Tapsell’s collection coined "Brighten Up Winter in Wool" and Tara Warren’s "Childhood Memories" reflecting colours and shapes found in tukutuku patterns on the panels of Marae. Her knit cardigans with cable knit and patched sleeve detailing would be warm comfort on a cold Dunedin night!

D’monic Intent, a label designed by Maxine Wooldridge, Kris Leitch and Samara Wooldridge, featured structural streetwear masterpieces, including the spacial woollen matrix top pictured left.

Adrienne Whitewood, overall winner at the 2011 Miromoda Fashion Designer Awards Competition held in Wellington, presented a cohesive collection in rich ox blood and dark brown. Whitewood named her commercially wearable story Te Aho Tapu – The Sacred Thread.

Hair at Miromoda was created by the Fabrik Hair team from Hamilton for KMS California. They said the challenge behind the hairstyles for the Miromodo show was the fact that 6 very different designers were showing, and some were using the same models. It was decided to split them into two groups:

Look 1 is clean at the sides, with the hair placed into two pony tails. Each pony is back-combed and rolled up to form two buns or rolls. This look will be used for three different walks.

In order to add dimension to each individual walk, the Fabrik team used brightened up their own salon-created hairpieces using Goldwell Elumen Colors. The pieces were then pasted together into two-foot long waves using KMS Hairstay Max Hold Hair Spray RRP$27 and the heat of hair straighteners.

Look 2 is a simple low pony backcombed lightly in small sections, then stitched up at the back and lightly teased out. The look was based on versatility, so as to look good for each designer.

The use of hair pompoms was used to change the style in between walks.
