Huffer El Summer

The Huffer show ending NZ Fashion Week broke all the rules. It was off-site, in-season, and full of excited fans rather than the jaded and nonchalant. Instead, their El Summer event was an installation-cum-exhibition-cum-celebration…

It’s basically turned into the un-official end-of-fashion-week party. Yes, Huffer really know how to throw a party.

The Huffer show ending NZ Fashion Week is a contradiction of terms to some extent; it’s not a fashion show per se, and it’s not even a trade show event for buyers and media viewing the following winter range. It broke all the rules. It was off-site, in-season, and full of excited fans rather than the jaded and nonchalant.

Rather than taking the traditional route of a seated show, Huffer chose to unveil their El Summer (Spring/Summer 12) in-season range in what they aptly called "an installation, meets exhibition, meets celebration."

Huffer consists of Steve Dunstan, (the other original designer Dan Buckley left a few months ago to pursue his own path) and Aimee McFarlane and Sam Hickey. The celebration refers to the fifteen years of Hufferdom and a decade and a half of the street fashion brand becoming much-loved, much-worn, and making headlines while doing so.

The exhibition is a display of campaign imagery shot by Mark ‘The Cobrasnake’ Hunter in Los Angelos, and the installation is handcrafted and sewn cacti created by artist Priscilla Hunter.

We arrived at the only queue of fashion week – a long snaking line on the Strand in Takapuna Beach where we got to see the new HUFFER store in the McKenzie Project development, transformed into a photobooth. Models, styled by Zara Mirkin, with hair by KMS and RYDER with make-up by M.A.C. in full view of guests. (Pictured above left.)

The party going off to Joel Coombs aka Joel Paydirt DJing. The best food of fashion week was on offer with Mexican-themed food and drinks at the bars.
