Again showing with its sister label, RUBY, Liam kicked off NZ Fashion Week 2012 with a giant show seated in the main shed; on-site for a change. Fashion week’s weather had started with a torrential downpour and we all arrived slightly damp, but eager to let the fashion deluge begin. In attendance were the two couples from renovation TV show The Block, as well as front row-ers Sara Tetro, Colin Mathura-Jeffree and Kylie Cooke all from NZ’s Next Top Model (sans Chris Sisarich.)

Liam opened with a sombre woolen jacket, understated rather than with a powerful colour punch.

They always do a maxi dress beautifully; this time in sand-washed silk olive green, split to the waist. The Liam black backless dress that was seen everywhere on the prettiest girls around town this year with a cowl back, has been reinvented with a loosely-falling back scarf.

There were matching bright suits in red, and muted shades of olive green, mushroom brown, mint green. And, of course – it is winter, and it IS New Zealand – black.

Edgy leather and chain harnesses gave a hard edge to otherwise ladylike outfits. One of the few prints was a floral blue, almost batik-like, print on cotton trousers.

The designers seem to be further differentiating the two labels’ customers with each successive range. Ruby is their more youthful label and Liam, which replaced Madame Hawke, the more mature. Liam designers say their range has an "understated and elegant feel, with a focus on clothing with a purpose whether it’s at home, at work and entertaining" and it goes easily between the three.

Hair creative Michael Beel says of the Liam look, ‘We created an up-do that looked as though the girls had done it themselves. It exuded classic beauty.’
