NZ Fashion Week 23 September 2010

The highly anticipated showing of Nicole Miller AW11 at New Zealand Fashion Week was an almost entirely black affair.

Another closet Edward Cullen fan, she showed a darker more moody collection of 1990’s supermodel body con cocktail frocks with delicate details of beaded skull motifs, bondage style lattice work and fine webbed knits.

Perhaps with an penchant for British designers, there were strong references to works by Christopher Kane, Paula Thomas and more notably Mark Fast with open style webbed pieces layered over leather skinny pants all screaming out to be worn by the hippest of Hollywood celebs like Vanessa Hudgens and Kristen Stewart, who have the bodies to rock body con and the attitude to match.

Softer pieces in grey dip dyed silk ideal for the New Zealand aesthetic of draping and layering would be easy sales down under but the collection was heavy on black lacing cut-aways suggesting a stronger divide between fashion continents. The lace up paneling looked stunning on the svelte runway divas but on the everyday NZ woman may put the outrageous back into fortune and draw too many comparisons to Pascal West.

Leather paneled leggings appeared in almost every collection this year and Nicole Miller showed her version along with ripped grey washed sequin skinnies and skull printed oversized tees.

Snood style scarves help define this as a winter collection however for the most part it was made up of trans-seasonal cocktail dresses in a classic American sportswear style.
