Salasai Heartlands AW13
New Zealand Fashion Week Thursday 6th September 2012
Salasai took us on a trip to the American mid-west with their Autumn Winter 2013 collection ‘Heartlands’.
Heartland, in an American sense, refers to the States in the mid-Western USA that don’t touch an ocean; the bible-belt, red-coloured States.
These Heartlanders wore sticks of hay in their pockets and clutch purses, straight from the prairie. Men’s jackets had elbow patches in readiment for manual labour on the farm – or the laptop.
Lemon was a surprising colour choice for winter, with pastel yellow shades in silk, interestingly paired with black silk sleeves in a top with a sweet bow at the neck. I particularly liked a lemon double-breasted linen suit.
In past season, Salasai has shown plaid strongly as their print of choice. For AW13, the label uses a blue and brown chevron zigzag print to great effect on separates and suits.

Make-up was created by MAC Cosmetics with a strong red lip and autumnal eyeshadow in the bohemian, world-traveller ‘Roam-Antique’ make-up trend.
Hair was pulled loosely back into low ponytails by Stephen Marr and Vidal.
