Uncharted Territory was the name of the winter 2012 collection for Salasai at St Matthews in the city on Tuesday night. A more haunting venue you could not find.

And it only added to the whole theatrics of the evening, and was quite simply the show of the day. And takes gothic to a whole new level.

The menswear is so often an afterthought but with Unchartered Territory it is nearly as strong as the women’s collection.

The simple navy peacoat was gorgeous, as was the show-stopping use of an electric red, teal and black tartan as a men’s cape. With camel blazers and chiffon pants thrown in for the men, it was stunning.

The coloured soled DMs that were worn by all the models with red and forest green soles were amazing.

The womenswear didn’t just sit with ubiquitous black with camel, rather, there was navy, and two different tartans in camel and black, and red and teal to add to the mix.

There were capes, and maxi pinafores, leather shorts and cute boxy blazers with pleated kneelength skirts.

Add to that oversized letterman sweaters and cardigans and it had a preppy feel to it. We loved the East Anglia lettered jumper in black and grey marle.

Of particular note was the nude dress with the black sash and pearl detailing at the hip. Underwear, mostly in black and burgundy, was by Miss Crabb.

Editor’s Favourite: This nude dress with black waistband.

A beautifully-cut double breasted coat with contrast sleeves.

The pearl detailing was carried through with the models, all the hair was done with pearls running down the parting and strong blacked eyes.

Beauty was by M.A.C. with key make-up artist Amber D, with the inspiration “Bondage Tape Was Used To Achieve a ‘60’s Liner Shape.” The cosmetics facechart is below.

Kirsha Whitcher, who began Salasai in 2006, takes her bow.

It was most definitely a case of fashion and theatre colliding; not completely unchartered territory for Salasai, a label not afraid of a bit of drama.
