Starfish Seven Sisters AW 2011
NZ Fashion Week Tuesday 21 September 2010
Well, what a way to open fashion week! We were expecting a good solid show from Starfish creator, Laurie Foon, but we were not expecting it to be so big and so layered.
We were expecting her signature neutral toned palette, but we not expecting it to be so extensive.
Layers and layers of texture, and subtle large florals, tartans, checks and fine stripes. Sage, browns, navys, nudes, and even glittery greys were all present. Dresses, pants, skirts, jackets were all there and the jackets were especially strong with car coats, bombers, and ¾ sleeved jackets.
But it was easy to forget it was a winter show with light flowing maxi dresses. Our favourite was the caramel and cream large floral print in a wrap maxi dress. You could wear it right now (if it were a fraction warmer and the wind ever actually stopped.)
Loved the accessories with felt, and metallic-finish hats, as well as gloriously coloured, chunky scarves.
My personal favourite was the ‘lily’ tunic in both peach and black – silk velvet tunic with a billowing back detail that was simple and beautiful.
Also of particular note where the 50’s inspired dresses, which instead of being tight and restrictive in the bodice, where a ‘loose’ version – which looked feminine, beautiful and wearable.
The show was called ‘seven sisters’ and takes its inspiration from the fact that sisters share their wardrobes, and the term ‘sisters’ one imagines, is a figurative one.

And without even being aware of it, as no concessions have been made in the collection, it is also a ‘catwalk with a conscience’. The footwear was by Moki Aotearoa, upcycled clogs styled with woolly socks. Even the goody bag, in fabric printed by Design & Print Textile, was filled with eco products from The Body Shop, Pureology, and ecostore.
So you get to look good and feel fabulous at the same time.
