Stolen Girlfriend’s Club Last Night’s Party

"Oops I did it again" boomed over the crowd to start the Stolen Girlfriend’s Club show at The Mercury Theatre. A fitting choice of song, as again like last year, the audience had to wait outside in the cold beforehand (oops!) and again, it was well worth the wait as the show was a rather memorable one.

Models strutted towards the crowd on the once majestic, now slightly decrepit, Mercury stage. A fitting venue for SGC, working well with their iconic rough-round-the-edges style. Blinding lights flashing on and off and songs being switched mid-walk were reminiscent of house parties where anything goes.

And that seemed to be the case this year with the collection. Anything goes. A mish-mash of ruffles, faux fur, turtle necks, bell sleeves, lace, polos, studded chokers and maroon leather were seen throughout the show.

This mish-mash approach somehow always seems to work for SGC though, even though it may appear rather haphazardly put together, as the crowd was wild with whoops and whistles throughout.

The signature print of purple hydrangeas on cigarette butts (recalling waking up in the garden after last night’s party) was printed on all matter of fabrics: denim, flannelette and chiffon, as well as on guests’ goody bags. It was an outstanding pattern, showing up in both menswear and womenswear.

Sometimes it felt like a case of style over substance and that some things were lost along the way, resulting in a last minute feel to some garments.

The show was concluded fantastically by the models creating a human corridor on stage, which a bride and groom walked down and got married. Booming confetti, bouquet thrown and all. Carrying on the old tradition of finishing with a bride. The groom was most notably dressed head to toe in a hydrangea and cigarette butt print suit.

The showmanship was really enveloping and outshone much of the collection itself on the night. Fortunately however Stolen Girlfriend’s Club have created a name and a following for themselves, so no doubt the collection will be a winner in stores.
