What’s new to come across my path during this month, January 2014, in beauty, hair, and skincare product releases, in the year’s first edition of ON MY DESK.
Trilogy Mineral Radiance Mask
I first tried their Trilogy Purifying Masque years ago and loved it. Now, Trilogy has released their new formulation Mineral Radiance Mask (it’s changed from the French ‘masque’ to a more Kiwi ‘mask’) with rosehip, kaolin and pohutukawa. It’s a clarifying natural clay mask that is especially good for pores and feels amazing on. As with all masks, avoid the delicate eye area, and apply after cleansing and rinse off thoroughly. This is definitely one of my favourite masks. A 60ml jar retails for $35.90. See www.trilogyproducts.com
Clairol Curl Definer
If you’re a girl-with-curl, like myself, you’ll appreciate this next one. I’m so glad waves are back after all those desert years of over-straightened hair. Clairol have released a Curl Definer Shampoo, Conditioning Lotion, and a Curls In curl mousse which I’ve used in my hair after washing. Remember to add it in the ends rather than the roots so it doesn’t weigh down your hair, but calms frizz. Available at selected salons nationwide for $16.90 and $23.50 for the mousse. For stockists call 0508 493 552.
Clarins Graphic Expression Face and Blush Powder
I am a big fan of Clarins’ face powders; their smooth formulation, their creamy texture and the shimmering-but-not-sparkly glow they give. This season Clarins has released its Face & Blush Powder in a diagonally-striped arrangement of bronzers, a hot pink blush, and a cooler pink blush. What really pops out though, is the strip of gold to give it a hint of glimmer. Swirl your blusher brush around the palette to mix all the shades, tap off the excess, and apply to areas where the sun would naturally hit your face. Clarins Graphic Expression Face and Blush Powder is $76 from Clarins counters from 24th February.
KANU Bee Venom Lip Plumper and Eye Lift
The eyes and around the mouth are early indicators of ageing, and I know I have my fair share of fine lines around both of them. To help plump them, I’ve started using the KANU Eye Lift, which is a clear tube of liquid product dispensed with a metal rollerball that rolls a thin layer onto the skin just where you want it to sit. It absorbs well, and doesn’t run. The Eye Lift contains an extra 50% Vetox – the high-strength bee venom used in all KANU skincare – for the stimulation of collagen production in skin. Bee venom is gathered from their own beehives in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. In industry news, the former Managing Director of L’Oreal New Zealand has joined Honeylab, the company behind KANU, as a Director. KANU Bee Venom Lip Plumper retails for $29 and Eye Lift for $39. See www.kanubeevenom.com for info and where to buy.
Manuka Doctor Blemish Cream
If you’re wanting a natural alternative to spots, that doesn’t contain the chemical benzoyl peroxide, there doesn’t seem to be much around. Here’s an option that uses UMF 18+ Manuka honey and propolis, with witch hazel, which is well-known as an astringent and also a disinfectant, helping to control bacteria and gives a better appearance to red skin as it’s anti-inflammatory. You can apply the Blemish Cream up to three times a day to pimple prone skin. Available for $17.95 from Manuka Doctor at 1 Quay Street Auckland City or online at www.manukadr.co.nz
Oxygen Skincare Teens 2 in 1 Cleanser
Speaking of teenage skin, it can be anything but a teenage dream. Nelson-based natural skincare brand Oxygen Skincare’s lana Riley has just released a Teen 2 in 1 Cleanser with organic hop extract. This has anti-bacterial, astringent, and anti-inflammatory properties to help with acne. It exfoliates with super fine pumice and calms with mandarin essential oils. The Teen cleanser retails for $27.50 from www.oxygenskincare.co.nz. Also from Oxygen, I have been enjoying their Hand & Body Creme. This also utilises hero ingredient organichops, with divine fragrances of vanilla. In fact I have been trying to find a nice vanilla hand cream for ages so I was rapt to use this one.
Radiance Vitamin B100 Complex
If you’re anything like me January is leaving you feeling a bit run down. Yes, it was the holidays – but if you’re a Mum then this is no holiday – it is actually exhausting! Radiance has this great complex of B Vitamins to fight the fatigue. It contains a high potency formulation of eleven B Vitamins that can be depleted in our bodies by caffeine, stress, intense exercise, alcohol, and not eating properly. Radiance Vitamin B100 Complex retails for $28.90 for 30 caps, $40.90 for 60, and $62.90 for 12, from health stores and pharmacies nationwide. Call 0508 600 400 for stockists.
Sebastian travel minis
Mini products are just fabulous. Pop them in your suitcase, in your drawer at the office, or in your handbag – and they are the perfect size to go. They’re also cheaper to buy so it’s a great way to try out a new brand to see if it suits you. Sebastian Professional have released a new ‘Urban Explorer looks’ collection, and this February will launch nine new minis to add to their miniature range. To care for hair there’s the popular Hydre Shampoo and Conditioner, Penetraitt Shampoo and Conditioner, and Volupt Shampoo and Conditioner. To style hair, there’s miniatures in Sebastian Professional Whipped Créme, Mousse Forté, and Thread’s fave – the Volupt Spray. Minis $12 each from selected salons nationwide.
