On My Desk: new make-up releases for Spring from Smashbox, Inika, Dr. Hauschka, as well as nail colours from Mavala and Sally Hansen…

Pastels are massive this spring in fashion and nail lacquer follows the trend with sorbet shades, such as these cool tones from Mavala Switzerland, pictured left. With Lemon Cream, Candy Floss, Blue Mint, Fresh Melon, Pistachio, and Frozen Berry, it’s a sacharine-sweet trip to the candy shop. Mavala are $9.95 each from Farmers and selected department stores and pharmacies.

Magnetic nail polish is another new nail-art trend and Sally Hansen have released Magnetic Nail Color in 8 popular bright and metallic shades. How it works is you apply one coat, let it dry, apply a second coat and immediately hold the nailpolish lid’s built-in magnet over the name and the metal particles attract to to it and shift to create a pattern. The magnetic lacquer retails for $21.99 from 3rd October from Farmers, Kmart and selected pharmacies.

Speaking of candy floss and mint sweets, how about this new make-up range from Inika called ‘Fairground.’ With a limited edition Mineral Eye Shadow in Candy Mint and a Limited Edition Mineral Blusher in Carousel, it gives you a fresh, youthful colour palette for Spring that’s super sweet and incredibly pretty. As with all Inika cosmetics, it’s free of parabens and mineral oils. Fairground includes an eye liner, two eye shadows, a blusher and a Lip Whip in Melon and retails for $99 from selected pharmacies and healthfood stores.

Sometimes you just want something you can wear. No neon, no crazy colours, just flattering shades you can go to work and out in afterwards and look great in. Muse by Smashbox is a completely wearable collection that does just that. Its hero product is the Muse Palette – good value at $65 for six eyeshadows – in highly pigmented nude shades, and a similar Icon Palette in smoky shades. The Airblush Whipped Cheek Colour ($43) is a cream-to-powder blush in two look-good-on-everyone shades: Berry Bliss and Dusty Rose. My fave is the Wateerproof Shadow Liner ($45 in charcoal or metallic bronze); a chubby eye stick that’s incredibly soft on the eye area. The Muse collection is available from selected Life Pharmacies, beauty spas and at Smashbox on Ponsonby Road Auckland.

A brand that does consistently gorgeous colours and quality is the German natural skincare and cosmetics company Dr.Hauschka. Their new season make-up includes Eyeshadow Duos in Caramel and Cedar (below left) and Cinnamon and Deep Bronze (below right.) I like Lipstick 08; a pretty dusky rose pink lipstick shade perfect for Spring. My pick though of the range is the Dr.Hauschka Illuminating Powder. I’m wearing it now and it gives a lovely highlight and delicate sheen. For the face, try a lighter coverage with their extremely popular Toned Day Cream, instead of foundation, in warmer weather. Well before the current BB cream trend, Dr.Hauschka was giving protection, a healthy glow, and evening out skintone, with its Toned Day Cream; it’s a classic.
