On My Desk: Summer suncare with new sunscreen from Reef and Coola, and ways to incorporate sun protection in your daily make-up routine from Invisible Zinc, Antipodes, Nivea Sun Kids, Aveeno, and Dr.Lewinn’s…

Antipodes have answered many people’s prayers with the advent of Immortal natural sun protection face and body moisturizer SPF15. It may not make your skin live forever, but it will help keep its youthfulness for a while longer, with sun filters to block up to 93% of UVA and UVB rays. A natural sunscreen is one that has mineral filters – such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide – rather than the synthetic filters such as PABA and petrochemical ingredients. No-one knows sunshine like the Aussies, and Reef is an Australian suncare brand that has just launched into the New Zealand market with a coconut-themed line of eight products aimed at 18-26 year olds and all reasonably priced at $13.99. It recalls the retro days of coconut oil, but with modern sun protection factors of SPF30+. Reef is available from Life, Unichem, Amcal, Radius and Care pharmacies.

A brand that’s new to our market is the USA-made COOLA, with a range of mineral Baby, Kids & Sensitised Skin SPF 50 sunscreens. The baby sunscreen is unscented and has 100% natural environmental shield, which means it shields form both the sun and pollution. It is a mineral SPF 50 with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection with no chemicals or preservatives; rather, it uses plankton and organic beeswax to naturally boost SPF protection with Titanium Dioxide 10%, Zinc Oxide 3.5%, and organic Shea Butter, Sesame Seed, Avocado and Evening Primrose Oils to moisturise. It is ideal for those with fragrance allergies, eczema and other skin sensitivities. COOLA is $55 and is available in beauty salons, medi-spas, Dermatologists, cosmetic clinics and specialty boutiques. I am definitely using this on my kids.

Invisible Zinc is a brand I keep using year after year as I like that it is a physical sunscreen with zinc oxide and has no parabens and is very low-irritant. I also like that it comes in so many useful forms – there’s a foundation, powder, daily lotion, and tinted moisturizer to name a few – and of course the classic sunscreens themselves.

Aveeno’s Positively Radiant line contains soy to reduce blotchiness and discolouration. Their Daily Moisturiser ($20.99) has a SPF30 for UVA and UVB protection, as does their Tinted Moisturizer ($24.99), which comes in light or medium sheer tints for a bit of coverage on summer days.

Dr.Lewinn’s Facial Moisturizing Lotion SPF30+ has a broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays in a daily moisture face cream in this elegant pump bottle. It is a non-greasy, matte-finish formula whch contains antioxidants including vitamin E to fight free radical damage, and hydrates with pro-vitamin B5, green tea extract and nourishing shea butter. It is preservative and fragrance free, and retails for $59.90.

Nivea Sun Kids is not only a low-cost and readily-available sunscreen, it comes in sensitive skin options – one of which is this fascinating product; a roll on sunscreen. The idea is that it’s remarkably easy to put it on children who don’t stay still for very long and you only need one hand to do it! Available from The Warehouse and many retailers nationwide for around $7.
