Beauty nut: skincare with nut oils

You don’t have to be nuts about beauty to notice all the beauty products that contain nuts and nut oils for their incredibly rich skin-revitalising benefits.

The beautiful thing about nut oils is they are a botanical way to replenish the skin so you maintain the vital moisture you need. We all know how our face feels when these oils are stripped; dry, tight and drawn. Natural oils penetrate deeply into the skin, oxymoronically not feeling ‘oily’ as synthetic creams can, but without leaving a greasy residue.

We take a look at what’s new in skincare with nut oils. Warning: May contain nuts…

Almonds

Weleda Almond Facial Masque

Delicious toasted and nutritionally beneficial raw, almonds are a nut oil with EFAs and anti-oxidant rich Vitamin E. Weleda’s Almond Facial Masque ($23.90) is incredibly soothing, perfect for sensitive skins. It’s hypoallergenic and ideal for rosacea or allergy-susceptible skins.

Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream

With herbal extracts calendula, chamomile, St.John’s Wort and anthyllis in a creamy almond base, Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream ($35.00) is a natural and gentle way to cleanse your face morning – removing toxins eliminated naturally while you sleep – and night – removing the day’s surface dirt and makeup. The almond base preserves the hydrolipid mantle of the skin and almond meal binds to dirt and impurities.

Important: do not scrub your face clean! Use a “press and roll” cleansing technique with both hands to form a suction motion, to protect the precious acid-mantle of your skin – keeping your skin at pH 4.5 to pH 6. Starting at the centre of your forehead, press the Cleansing Cream into your skin with a light touch. Never scrub. After pressing, open and “roll” your hands away from your face in a wave-like motion. Repeat this “press and roll” movement, woking from the centre of your face outward and moving down your face. Repeat for 1 – 3 minutes.

Burt’s Bees Carrot Nutritive Day Creme and Night Creme

Perfect with Easter around the corner! From the bees to the bunnies. Root for great skin with these terracotta-coloured Carrot Nutritive Day and Night Cremes ($56.00 each) with almond, avocado and coconut oils to leave your skin nourished and moisturised. The carrot day cream has the rich and creamy texture you know and love from the classic Burt’s Bees moisturisers, but taking a different ‘root’ via carrot seed oil and beta-carotene, rich in vitamin A which help revitalise sun-drenched and mature skin. It has a more lightweight feel than the beeswax creams for those fancy a lighter touch.

Coconuts

Coconut oil is rich in anti-oxidants and Vitamin E to deeply condition hair and skin.

WELLA SP Repair Shampoo and Repair Mask

The Repair shampoo ($31.00) contains wheatgerm oil and coconut oil derivative to gently cleanse hair of impurities without stripping it of natural oils. A rich and intensive conditioning treatment, 3.2 Repair Mask ($33.00) uses hydrolysed keratin proteins to penetrate your hair and repair the inside hair structure.

Pure Fiji Coconut Milk Shampoo and Coconut Creme Conditioner in Passionflower

Pure Fiji’s traditional Fijian range of ultra nourishing shampoo and conditioners ($25.00 each) contain an exotic blend of coconut crème and island drift-nut extracts, fortified with soy and wheat proteins to help repair damage hair and improve resilience. The sulphate free range comes in an assortment of deliciously tropical flavours to ensure that your hair is gently cleansed and nourished whilst left with a deliciously tropical scent to enjoy all day long.

Pure Fiji Body Butter Coconut

Also in the Pure Fiji range of eco-friendly and sustainbly produced botanical skincare is the Body Butter ($43.00) with exotic nut extracts to instantly hydrate skin. The butters are available in gorgeous fruit and flower flavours of pineapple (pictured above) frangipani, coconut, gingerlily, passionflower, mango, starfruit and coconut and milk honey.

Argan Oil

Argan oil is one of the rarest oils in the world due to the small and very specific growing area of the Argan tree, in south-west Morocco. It is creating a buzz in the beauty industry due to its reputed anti-ageing properties, which have helped create a global market as a high-value product, and may be the endangered Argan tree’s best hope of conservation. Argan Oil is well documented for its high nutritive, moisturizing and regenerating properties for the body and face as it contains 80% monounsaturated fat with Omega 6 fatty acids and natural vitamin E, a powerful anti-oxidant.

Morroccanoil

Moroccanoil is used on towel-dried hair, before blow-drying. Secondly, put it into colouring. It will even out blonde tonality and prolong the colour of hair. Users feel a change in the quality of their hair. It speeds up blowdry time by 40% and makes it easier to style. It’s a thermoprotectant, a UV protectant, and can be mixed with colourants to lessen the harmful effects of chemicals. The range includes shampoo, conditioners and styling products. The oil will be the first in the range to be available here in New Zealand, retailing at approx $60 for 100ml bottle.

Gamarde Argan Oil Nutritive Intense Serum

The intensely nutritive qualities of Argan Oil combined with the thermal spring water come together in this anti-ageing serum, Gamarde Nutrition Intense Serum Argan ($92.00), along with Lavendin, Rosewood and Vitamin E.
