I think everyone is in two camps.
You either like the warm glow of the sun on your skin, or the warmth of gorgeous new tights!
But whether you’re a summer or a winter gal, there’s no denying that at this time of year our bodies are on show a lot more. We take a look at what’s new in skincare for the body, this summertime…
Dr.Lewinn’s Bio-Care Oil differs greatly from the leading bio oil brand of oil, in that the Dr.Lewinn’s oil is free of petrochemicals. Instead, it is made from Echium Oil, which I was unfamiliar with; a cold-pressed oil from the seeds of Echium Plantagineum which contains all the essential fatty acids and significant levels of an Omega-3 to promote skin regeneration and formation of collagen and elastin. It contains no paraffin, parabens, fragrance, or synthetic ingredients, and is ideal for scars, stretchmarks and for pregnancy. It’s available at Farmers, Ballantynes, Arthur Barnett’s and selected pharmacies nationwide for $25.90. See www.drlewinns.co.nz for more info.
I love the personal story behind Pacifica Skincare. Jenny Agnew used $5,000 set aside for redecoration of a home bathroom in 1998 to follow her dream and begin the company known for its beautifully packaged soaps. After the untimely death of her son from lyphoma she continued her company and it went from strength to strength, and she developed the Banks & Co line using NZ botanicals as well.
I have given Pacifica Skincare to my husband’s family when they visited New Zealand from England; it’s simply a gorgeous and well-made product you are proud to give. I think it represents New Zealand flora – from hand painted watercolour designs created at Pacifica’s Mt Eden headquarters – well, without looking overly touristy or cheesey. It sells at top giftware outlets such as Flying Saucers, Living and Giving, and Kirkcaldies, and exports to Australia, Korea, Japan and China. Jenny positions the giftware as ideal for the tourist market, but also appealing to New Zealand purchasers. “We hit what we call ‘the crossover’,” she comments. “This was the point at which New Zealanders began to buy our product for its own appeal, to give to others in New Zealand or to send overseas."
I tried Pacifica Skincare’s Juicy Orange range, which had a divine fruity scent which invigorates the senses. And look at the gorgeous floral and fruity packaging, above.

QSilica is a brand many may be familiar with from the past, that has recently undergone somewhat of an overhaul. And to its great merit, as it looks great. The skincare and capsules take a synergistic approach to beauty wherby one builds skin inside and out using the natural mineral silica to support healthy skin, hair and nails. Silica is essential for the production of collagen in the skin. It is highest in infancy and declines as we age. When taken internally and externally, it is clinically proven to assist skin’s condition and thickness by as much as 30%.
The QSilica Colloidal Capsules retail for $39.90 for 50 capsules or $74.90 for 100 capsules, the QSilica Revive Nutrient Boost Face & Neck Moisturiser is $35.90 for 50ml and the QSilica Rehydrate Energising Facial Mist is $19.90 for 50ml. QSilica is stocked in selected pharmacies nationwide, see www.lifestream.co.nz for details.
These last two body moisturisers are similar in that they’re both natural and both in metal tubes, which I love – I think it reminds me of art class!
Weleda Skin Food $16 is the richest body moisturiser I’ve used; many are thinned out and milky, but this is a very thick cream like an ointment in consistency for use on stubborn dryness on your elbows, hands and feet. It conditions with essential fatty acids and vitamin E in an organic sunflower seed oil, and contains organic pansy for its mild antiseptic properties that calm dry irritation, and soothing rosemary leaf extract’s mild antiseptic properties and the anti-inflammatory properties of Biodynamic and organic calendula flower extract gently nourish and care for your skin. It is gently fragranced with a herby smell and I would definitely use it again.
GROWN Organic Alchemist is a brand I adore using for its biodynamic yet completely natural ingredients, and this intensive body moisturiser is no exception. The tin tube has GROWN’s signature vintage font typesetting which always looks so cool, and pale pink lettering on black makes a nice change from black and white on your bathroom shelf. It has a light, not overpowering rose fragrance and contains superfoods acai and pomegranate. The texture is a true cream; lighter than Weleda and heavier than the lotions. I would use this everyday.
So, whether you’re a sunkissed summer beauty or a winter-loving girl, moisturise your skin and look great this season.
