There are several differences between the skin of children and adults; children’s skin has a low repair capacity, insufficient pigmentation and an incomplete immune defense, meaning mothers use more sunscreen (3.6 packs) than the female population (2.7 packs)

We learned facts and figures about protecting children’s skin at NIVEA Sun’s launch event on 13th September.

Children’s skin is all around more sensitive to the sun. As we grow, our skin pigmentation and own protection to the sun’s rays develops, however in young skin the natural sun shield against UV radiation is incomplete. This means children’s skin needs extra protection.

By the time we are 18, we have been exposed to 80% of our total UV exposure. It seems a little ironic that our skin is insufficiently ‘naturally’ protected during these younger years when we spend most of our time exposed to UV light!

But getting kids to stand still long enough to have their sunscreen lotion applied, and trying to reapply while they are having fun is no easy feat.

Wet application sunscreens have been developed to combat this problem, including NIVEA Sun Kids Swim & Play Protection Lotion SPF50+ ($19.39) with a combination of chemical and mineral sunscreens and soothing Panthenol.

Below: Don’t make buying sunscreen something for your bucket list. Put in the spade work now.
