The marriage of science and beauty sounds like a B Grade film with the high school nerd getting the cheerleader.

But actually when scientists work on skincare with the latest in research and developments applied to making us look younger and better, the union has some beautiful children as a result.

We look at a few new high-tech releases in skincare and beauty from Nimue, Skin Doctors, Clinique and Sally Hansen.

Below: A couture labcoat? It’s beautiful science.

Nimue Glyco Mask

Perfect for results in a hurry with a clay mask for a quick radiance boost for enviornmentally-damaged skin. Nimue Skin Technology Glyco Mask ($49.90) is a rapid flash mask which stays on the face for just ten minutes.
When to use: Once a week to give radiance to dull skin.
What does it do? You brush on an even layer to face and neck using the brush provided and wash off with the disposable cleaning cloths. There is sufficient for two applications.
When not to use it: It can cause tingling and temporary redness so don’t use it on irritated or sensitive skin.

Clinique Laser Focus

Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle and UV Damage Corrector uses a patented enzyme to correct the sun’s visible damage.
When to use: Apply three drops each day to face and around eyes.
What does it do? The de-ageing serum reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, to repair and help prevent UV damage with results "remarkably close to a dermalogical laser treatment." Here’s their photo of a woman before and after 12 weeks of treatment.

What not to expect: You won’t get the same results as a laser. But they state that "using three drops a day over twelve weeks could achieve 63% of the visible wrinkle reducing power of laser."

Sally Hansen NailShine Miracle

And here’s my own hand wearing NailShine Miracle over my OPI coral polish.

Sally Hansen NailShine Miracle ($22.99) is a 10 day top coat to give a reputed "10 days of just applied shine."
When to use: Apply a thick coat ten minutes after applying your nail colour of any brand.
What does it do? Using a Marine Complex formula it delivers time-released Vitamin E to renew the shine on any nail colour. The high-gloss protective shield resists wear and tear to prevent chipping.
What not to expect: I still chipped mine about ten minutes after applying it so bear in mind it is not an instant hardener like a gel (eg Shellac or OPI Axiuum.) It looks slightlier shinier than normal but isn’t a super high gloss. It has kept my nail ends a lot more intact than usual.

Skin Doctors Eyetuck

Skin Doctors Eyetuck Anti-bag Technology ($69) is a non-surgical treatment for under eye bags. They claim it has been scientifically shown to reduce the appearance of under eye bags.
When to use: Dot the white cream under the eye using fingertips.
What does it do? It uses the peptide Eyeseryl to reduce excess fluid that can develop under the eye caused by the ageing process and poor lymphatic circulation to leave firmer looking skin.
What not to expect: It makes high claims that 95% of volunteers saw an improvement. It helps reduce puffiness but won’t give the same result as surgery. But it’s pain and needle-free.
