Kate Ritchie was in New Zealand recently promoting the new Cocoa Butter skincare range by Vaseline and Thread’s Megan Robinson asked the Australian actress about leaving Home and Away and her new role as Ambassador for the Vaseline skincare range…
Thread: How did you know it was the right time to leave Home And Away?
Kate Ritchie: It took a very long time to develop the courage to make my decision to leave HAA. In some strange way it felt as though the planets aligned and it was the exact right moment for me. It was 20 years and I had become a young woman and realised I was never going to be completely fulfilled if I didn’t stretch myself. Personally and professionally. It is very hard to leave a job that you have an emotional attachment to but I have not had a single regret about my timing.
Thread: What do you miss most about it?
KR: Mostly, I miss being ‘Sally’. I find it difficult to verbalise exactly what that means but it is the truth. I don’t miss much else.
Thread: Would you ever return?
KR: I would never discount returning to HAA.. Mr Stewart has to have a shindig at the Surf Club soon enough.. Maybe I will score an invite!
Thread: How does it feel to be the face of Vaseline?
KR: First and foremost it is an honour to be associated with such an iconic and respected brand. What I like most is that it feels like a great fit. It makes complete sense to me as I grew up with Vaseline in my mother’s vanity so I feel as though I have a personal history with the product too.
Thread: Do you have any awesome tips to use Vaseline for?
KR: I am not sure if it is an “awesome trick” but I have found that when using the Cocoa Butter line of lotions you can often skip putting on your perfume for the day. It has such a warm, luxurious fragrance that it is nice to let that be your scent. I have had many compliments!
Thread: How was it working with your mum on the recent Vaseline Cocoa Butter commercials?
KR: Working with my Mum on the commercials was a real treat because we have not had the opportunity to do that kind of thing together before. I thought it would be a nice insight for her to work alongside me.. I happen to think my Mum is a beautiful woman, inside and out, so it is lovely for other people to see that too.
Thread: What are you passionate about?
KR: My work. There has been a great transition for me over the past couple of years and I am working a couple of new projects that will hopefully reach televisions in 2010. After two years in breakfast radio, I feel as though I am back doing what I am meant to and yes, what I am passionate about.
As far as my work with Vaseline goes I am passionate about getting the population to moisturise more regularly. We are so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to body moisturising on a daily basis. So do what I do, which is treat it like brushing your teeth and do it day and night as soon as you jump out of the shower! (now I feel like I am preaching!)
Thread: You were a contestant on the celebrity singing competition, It Takes Two; do you think you will do any more singing?
KR: My singing days are over for now!
Thread: What are you most proud of?
KR: I am proud of many things. For years I was very proud of completing my schooling despite my commitment to HAA. Most recently, I have been proud of my AFI nomination for my role of Judi Kane in Series 2 of Underbelly. It was so very flattering and a lovely acknowledgement of something that I worked hard on.
