Most women over 30 complain of pigmentation from using the pill or from pregnancy.

I try the skin brightening range from Institut’ DERMed, a cosmeceutical line which has the highest concentration of active ingredients available without prescription. I was interested in their promise of potent, yet gentle lightening ingredients for positive results as I suffer from pigmentation around my right forehead and am hesitant to use harsh and abrasive treatments.

I used the Brightening Serum nightly after cleansing all over my whole face under moisturiser, and the Eye cream dotted around my eyes above and below, on dark circles. I have noticed visible results on my forehead pigmentation, in fact I was comfortable enough to go out without make-up on for the first time last week in years! It’s still there, just much more faded, and whilst I am aware of it, probably other people wouldn’t notice it now.

So, what causes hyperpigmentation?

The discoloured patches of skin and darker blotches so common to many women, are caused by abnormal melanocyte cell production (melanin) located in the base layer of the skin. Melanin protects newly dividing cells in the lower layers of the skin by absorbing ultraviolet radiation from the sun and preventing damage to the cell’s DNA.

However, overexposure to the sun causes visible pigmentation and hormonal imbalance from birth control pills, pregnancy and menopause can also cause pigmentation. While there’s no cure it’s possible to improve the look of blotchiness radically with topical brightening products, sunscreens and regular exfoliation treatments to remove cells that contain abnormal amounts of pigment.

A lightweight, hydrating treatment, Institut’ DERMed Glycolic Brightening Serum (RRP $70) visibly evens skin tone and prevents premature aging by supporting collagen production for a firmer, more lustrous complexion.

Mushroom derivative Kojic Acid is a natural lightener which ‘turns off’ melanin production. It refines, lightens and brightens the skin’s surface, while preventing free radical reactions from UV light exposure. Glycolic Acid Polymer – an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) derived from sugarcane – removes dead, pigmented skin cells and accelerates the fading process. Gallic Acid decreases melanin synthesis with its potent anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

How to use: Apply twice a week in the evening and gradually increase frequency of se. Mild tingling or redness – a sign that the active formula is working with your skin – is normal and temporary until your skin adjusts. Works best layered under your recommended Institut’ DERMed moisturiser.

Redefine your eye area with the Institut’ DERMed Brightening Eye Cream (RRP $125). This luxurious treatment is formulated with a unique blend of botanical extracts and Lactic Acid to lighten dark circles and smooth the eye contour.
Vitamin K thickens the skin around the eye, healing skin discoloration, bruising and dark circles. L-Arbutin – a natural derivative from Bearberry Extract -accelerates cell renewal to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and inhibits melanin production, protecting the delicate eye area from further damage.

How to use: Every morning and/or night as the last step, dab a small amount around the entire eye area. Pat and press gently until absorbed.
