Combining botanicals with advanced technology, Mario Badescu skincare is used by numerous celebrities now, but it all began when Romanian Mario opened his salon in New York back in 1967.

He brought his traditional skincare techniques to a new audience in the States and quickly gained a loyal following. From their popularity at the salon, requests led to his products being developed for retail to use at home.

Some skincare ranges go for natural ingredients, some for advanced technology. Mario Badescu Skin Care incorporates both. It is still based on the ingredients that Mario Badescu originally sourced from his kitchen pantry like milk, honey, almonds, chamomile, and caviar.

It isn’t completely organic; rather, it uses botanical ingredients. None of the products are tested on animals. The packaging is clean; pared-back, no-nonsense, in white plastic tubs and quite pharmaceutical looking. The prices are very reasonable, mostly under $60.

Below: some of the celebrity clients who use Mario Badescu.

For my age and skin type – ageing, with a combination complexion – this is what was prescribed:

Orange Tonic Mask $59
Use this clay-based mask containing orange peel twice a week to purify and tighten pores. Orange peel extract is a natural AHA which exfoliates the skin. Especially good if you are prone to pimples and blackheads, to clear out clogged pores.

Buttermilk Moisturizer $59
Now, this moisturizer isn’t in a turquoise bottle- the above photo is the ACTUAL colour of the moisturizer. It is a strong pale blue shade which is very distinctive. There’s no fragrance to it, it is very mild and soothing and is suitable for sensitive skins. It uses Lactic Acid as the rejuvenating AHA in this moisturizer for combination skin with non-pore clogging Carnation Oil and Allantoin, an anti-inflammatory, botanical ingredient to soothe and hydrate the skin.

Chamomile Night Cream $59
Favourite antioxidant ingredient Vitamin A teams up with Chamomile in this rich – yet calming – night cream designed to soothe dry skin. Ideal for sensitive skin types as it works instantly to calm blotchy, red skin. It has a lovely rich consistency and no fragrance.

Ceramide Eye Gel $59
Keep this little green pot of gel in the fridge nice and cold and pop it on in the morning for tired puffy eyes. This greaseless, lightweight eye gel formulated with softening Ceramides and nourishing Herbal Extracts works to replenish hydration around the delicate eye area.
