What’s your desert island product?

I adore moisturiser. It’s the one skincare item I couldn’t do without.

We take a look at some of the new moisturisers on the market for every budget. Try out – before you dry out…

For the lower end of the price spectrum, the old favourite, QV lotion, has a nurturing night cream. Priced at $23.67, this nourishing cream with Safflower Oil is a dermatologically tested, pH-balanced, low-irritant formulation is free from fragrance, colour, lanolin and propylene glycol, making it ideal for dry skin and even the most sensitive of skins. And it’s just for night; my husband is using it every morning.

As Anya at Thread said in her review of QV lotion earlier this year, "This has been the go to product for so many of us who have children with skin issues over the years. It is price competitive and consistent – and just always works. No perfume, good coverage, and good price! Some things never change – nor would you want them to."

Wellington-based rose-hip oil legends Trilogy have created an Ultra Hydrating Face Cream ($43.90) to wrap your skin in for winter to lock in moisture from the drying effects of cold weather and central heating.

With Evening Primrose oil and certified organic Rosehip oil (both rich in omega 3, 6 and 9), vitamin and mineral-rich Honey, plus repairing Coconut oil and skin strengthening Avocado oil, this is a super-concentrated rich cream. My mother aged 63 is using this cream each night.

Eua Thermale Avene has released a new line, Eluage, for its more mature client. Aimed at those women with anti-ageing concerns, Eluage contains Retinaldehyde and exclusive Hyaluronic Acid fragments; dermatologically proven in anti-ageing.
Avene Eluage Restructuring Anti-ageing Cream ($86.70) provides comfort and hydration for mature skin without tightness. It is formulated to improve skin radiance, even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Avene Eluage Concentrated Anti-ageing Gel ($45.90) is designed for those parts of our faces with deeper lines; crow’s feet, around the mouth and nose, to soften these day by day. It has a nozzle applicator to direct application to where its needed. Apply the cream and the gel at night; the cream over the entire face excluding the eye area and the gel over it, wherever deep lines are a concern.
Avene also have a Gentle Eye Make-up Remover out for sensitive skins, which is perfect to use before applying the Eluage range. RRP $30.50 for 100 ml. For stockists see www.avene.co.nz.

To hydrate skin through winter, Dermalogica have some beautiful solutions perfect for New Zealand where we are in and out of the elements all day and don’t enjoy the central heating that the Northern Hemisphere has. Climate Control ($78) is a lovely soothing balm to rub on to those sticky-out bits: heels, elbows and lips, for shielding against dehydration.

Their Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30 ($148.50) – part of their AGE smart line – is a medium weight daily moisturiser to apply in the morning before exposing skin to the elents. The SPF30 helps protect from winter sun and the patented polypeptide combined with Glucosamine and Soy stimulate collagen synthesis, enhancing skin’s ability to fight free radicals.

Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster ($131.50)is more intense than the Dynamic Skin Recovery above; it is their concentrated product to target dehydrated skin with a blend of Hyaluronic Acid, Panthenol, Glycolipids and algae extract. Use to minimise fine lines and bring moisture back to parched skin.

Hmmm, now I wonder what to pack for my desert island…or perhaps should that be, a snow-capped mountain?
