Skin Proud Dermatologist Dr Marisa Garshick shares the lowdown on menopause skincare

We know that during perimenopause and menopause your skin can start to change, and new skin concerns can arise, or current skin concerns become more prominent. The right advice and skincare routine is important to navigate the change with ease.

Skin Proud sat down with Skin Proud Consultant and Certified Dermatologist Dr Marisa Garshick to share the lowdown on menopause, what to boost in your routine and her derm-approved budget buys from Skin Proud for under $33!

“Skin concerns during menopause often relate to decreased levels of estrogen which can make the skin appear dry and thin. While not specific to menopause, but around the same time that many go through menopause, the cumulative effects of sun exposure can be more noticeable, including sunspots and other signs of photo damage. Some people find they bruise easier during menopause as the skin is thinner. Menopause also comes with a decrease in collagen which can lead to skin sagging, fine lines, and wrinkles. As skin cell turnover continues to slow down, people may also notice dullness of the skin Some people may also experience breakouts and slower wound healing.

During menopause, it is important to help replenish moisture in the skin and help to strengthen and support the skin barrier using key ingredients including humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides which help to strengthen and support the skin barrier, in addition to niacinamide which has anti-inflammatory benefits, can be soothing on the skin and helps to support the skin barrier. While retinoids can still be helpful to improve overall signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, it is important to avoid using too many active ingredients that can dry out the skin. Exfoliating ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acid can be considered to reduce dullness, but it is important to remember to avoid over-exfoliation. Sunscreen is always essential, so it is best to opt for a hydrating sunscreen. For any areas of dry, cracked skin, it can help to use a thicker cream to provide an occlusive barrier to lock moisture in and protect the skin from external irritants.

It is important to remember to wear sunscreen regularly, not just on beach days, even in your 20s to prevent dark spots and fine lines with age. Moisturising the skin regularly can also be important to keep the skin healthy and hydrated. It is best to avoid harsh soaps, or abrasive scrubs that can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier, leaving the skin susceptible to dryness, dehydration, and irritation. It is important to also remember that as we age, our skin may become drier, and may be less tolerant of certain ingredients, such as retinoids or exfoliating acids. For this reason, it is important to be gentle on the skin as the skin matures. It is also important to care for the skin barrier, making sure to properly moisturise the skin.
